Kockney Koi fibreglass blade waterfall returns

A blade return turns the water arriving back at your pond into a visible waterfall. These Kockney Koi models use a fibreglass body and are offered here in nominal 36-inch and 48-inch widths. They suit pond projects where the return is part of the design: a broad sheet of moving water above a raised pond, a feature wall, or a focal point beside a seating area.

Choose the width around the space available and the water effect you want. The larger option creates a wider feature, but the appearance also depends on the flow reaching the blade, its height above the pond and how accurately it is installed. Buying the widest return is not a substitute for planning the pump and pipe route. We recommend deciding on the complete arrangement before building a permanent wall around it.

Compare the two sizes

Option Nominal width Body material Purpose
36-inch blade 36 inches Fibreglass Waterfall-effect pond return
48-inch blade 48 inches Fibreglass Wider waterfall-effect pond return

The inch measurements identify the model. They are not a finished masonry opening specification. Allow for the complete body, the inlet connection, access for maintenance and the way the front of the blade meets the wall. Check the supplied unit before cutting the final opening or fixing surrounding stonework. That simple check is particularly useful on a renovation, where the existing wall may not be perfectly square.

What the blade does in a pond system

The blade forms the final visible return to the pond. Water needs to be delivered to it by a suitable circulation arrangement; the return itself does not drive the water. It is also not a replacement for the pond’s mechanical and biological filtration. Keep the filtration design appropriate for the fish population and feeding level, then plan the waterfall as part of the return route or a separate feature circuit.

Moving water adds sound and surface disturbance, but the finished effect should suit the pond and its surroundings. Consider nearby windows, paths and seating when choosing a position. A feature that sounds gentle during a quick test can be much more noticeable when it runs for several hours. Leave a practical way of controlling the feature without compromising equipment that needs continuous circulation.

Plan the flow at the installed height

When comparing pumps, look at the flow available at the height of the return, rather than only the headline maximum litres per hour. Lifting water and passing it through pipe, bends and other equipment reduces the amount that reaches the blade. A long, restricted supply route can leave an otherwise substantial pump producing a disappointing waterfall.

Keep the pipe route as straightforward as the site allows and select fittings that match the actual connection. Do not select a pump from the blade width alone or assume that an existing small fountain pump will be sufficient. If you are comparing a different style of return, our water blades with a 130mm spout offer another layout to consider. Their installation requirements must be checked separately; different blade designs are not interchangeable solely because their widths look similar.

Positioning and first checks

A level installation helps water distribute evenly along the lip. Support the body securely and arrange the supply so that its weight does not pull on the connection. Keep the inlet and any removable fittings accessible. Concealing every joint permanently may look neat initially, but it makes a later inspection or repair unnecessarily difficult.

Before finishing the surrounding surfaces, run the feature and inspect the water path. Watch for an uneven curtain, water tracking back towards the wall, splashing onto paving and leaks around joints. Test under the flow settings you expect to use. Adjust the position while access is easy rather than relying on sealant or extra pump power to disguise an alignment problem.

Allow for wind and splash

Think about where the water lands, not just where the blade starts. A taller drop gives falling water more exposure to wind and can spread splash beyond the pond edge. The return should land comfortably inside the water area under normal operating conditions. Watch the feature in breezy weather before assuming that a falling water level must be a leak in the pond liner.

Our gravity-fed water blades with a 100mm spout are worth comparing when planning a filter return. Check the intended flow arrangement for each design; a feature chosen for appearance still needs to work with the filtration and available space.

Cleaning and seasonal care

Inspect the lip and supply regularly for debris or deposits that interrupt the water pattern. Isolate the relevant equipment before maintenance and use cleaning methods suitable for the supplied finish. Check the support and accessible joints at the same time. A change in the waterfall may be caused by reduced pump flow or a blocked upstream component, so investigate the whole route rather than immediately replacing the return.

Include the waterfall in your winter operating plan. Exposed water features and their pipework need appropriate frost precautions, and an ornamental waterfall can increase heat loss from a heated pond. If you switch the feature off, make sure any essential filter circulation continues through its intended route. The best arrangement is one that looks right, is straightforward to inspect and remains manageable throughout the year.
