Hemp Agrimony | Eupatorium cannabinum
UK native pollinator friendly pond plant for wildlife gardens and damp areas
Hemp Agrimony is one of the best UK native plants you can add to a wildlife pond or damp garden. Eupatorium cannabinum is well known for its soft pink flower clusters and incredible ability to attract pollinators, making it a key plant for boosting biodiversity around your pond.
Flowering from July through to September, Hemp Agrimony produces large, fluffy heads of pale pink to light purple flowers that stand proudly above its upright stems. These blooms are rich in nectar and are particularly attractive to bees, butterflies, and hoverflies. Late summer is a critical time for pollinators, and this plant provides a reliable food source when many others have finished flowering.
The foliage is equally appealing, with divided, lance shaped green leaves that give the plant a natural, relaxed appearance. Growing in upright clumps, it adds height and structure to pond edges, damp borders, and wild planting schemes. It works particularly well when planted in groups, where it can create a soft, natural screen or backdrop.
Hemp Agrimony thrives in moist to wet soil conditions and is perfectly suited to pond margins, bog gardens, and low lying damp areas. It will tolerate shallow water up to around 10 cm deep but performs best with its crown just above the waterline. It grows well in full sun, which encourages the best flowering, although it will also cope in partial shade.
This plant is not just about looks. It plays an important ecological role by stabilising soil around pond edges with its strong root system. It also provides shelter for insects and small wildlife, helping to create a balanced and thriving pond environment.
Fully hardy across the UK, Hemp Agrimony is a low maintenance and dependable plant that will return year after year. It is best suited to larger ponds, wildlife gardens, and natural planting schemes where it has space to grow and spread naturally.
