Water Plantain | Alisma plantago-aquatica
Elegant Native Pond Plant with Delicate Lilac Flowers and Architectural Height
A Beautiful UK Native Marginal Plant for Wildlife Ponds, Lakes and Natural Wetland Areas
Water Plantain (Alisma plantago-aquatica) is a graceful UK native aquatic perennial that brings height, movement, and natural beauty to pond margins, wildlife ponds, lakes, wetlands, and naturalistic planting schemes. Recognised by its elegant sprays of delicate pale lilac flowers and attractive grey-green foliage, Water Plantain is one of Britain’s most distinctive native marginal plants.
Growing naturally along pond edges, marshes, rivers, and wetland habitats, Water Plantain forms attractive rosettes of broad lance-shaped leaves before sending up tall branching flower stems throughout summer. These airy stems carry hundreds of small pale pink to lilac flowers, creating a soft cloud of colour that sways beautifully in the breeze and adds a natural meadow-like appearance around the water’s edge.
As well as being highly ornamental, Water Plantain is extremely valuable for wildlife. The flowers provide nectar and pollen for bees, hoverflies, butterflies, and many other pollinating insects throughout the summer months. Meanwhile, the dense foliage and root systems provide shelter for amphibians, aquatic insects, and small pond creatures, helping to support a healthy and balanced pond ecosystem.
This vigorous native species is best suited to medium and large ponds, lakes, wildlife ponds, and natural wetland projects where its upright growth habit can be fully appreciated. While it can be grown in larger ornamental ponds, it may become too dominant for smaller water gardens.
Water Plantain thrives in shallow water and consistently moist soils, making it ideal for marginal shelves and natural pond edges. It performs well in both full sun and partial shade and is exceptionally hardy, returning year after year even after severe UK winters.
Its elegant flower stems, attractive foliage, and wildlife benefits make Water Plantain an excellent choice for anyone looking to create a more natural pond environment. Whether planted alongside Iris, Water Mint, Purple Loosestrife, or other native marginal plants, it helps create a thriving habitat that looks beautiful throughout the growing season.

Care Instructions
- Water Plantain is easy to grow and performs best in shallow water or permanently moist soil. Position the plant on a pond shelf with water covering the basket by up to 15cm.
- For best results, grow in full sun or partial shade where it will produce strong flowering stems and healthy foliage.
- Deadhead spent flowers if you wish to reduce self-seeding. In autumn, cut back old flower stems and dying foliage to keep the planting area tidy and encourage healthy growth the following spring.
- Although generally trouble free, providing good spacing around plants will help improve airflow and reduce the risk of mildew in particularly humid conditions.
