Brass Buttons

Bright yellow flowering creeping plant for pond edges and bog gardens

Brass Buttons, also known as Cotula coronopifolia, is a cheerful and versatile marginal plant that brings vibrant colour and soft texture to pond edges, shallow water areas, and bog gardens. With its distinctive button shaped yellow flowers and finely textured foliage, it is perfect for filling gaps and creating a natural, low growing carpet around your pond.

Flowering from late spring through to autumn, typically between May and October, Brass Buttons produces masses of small, bright yellow blooms that sit above the foliage. These flowers resemble tiny buttons, giving the plant its common name and adding a playful yet eye catching feature to your planting scheme. The blooms are attractive to pollinators, helping to support bees and other beneficial insects within your pond environment.

The foliage is equally appealing, with soft, finely divided green leaves that release a light aromatic scent when touched. Its creeping growth habit allows it to spread across damp soil and shallow margins, making it ideal for softening hard edges and blending pond borders into surrounding planting.

Brass Buttons thrives in moist to waterlogged soils and can tolerate shallow water depths, making it particularly useful for pond beach areas and marginal shelves. It grows well in full sun or partial shade and is a great choice for adding seasonal colour to wildlife ponds.

In the UK, this plant may behave as a short lived perennial or an annual, depending on winter conditions. In milder areas it may return year after year, while in colder regions it can be replanted annually or allowed to self seed in suitable conditions.

This plant is ideal for gardeners looking to add colour, texture, and ground cover to pond edges while also supporting biodiversity.
