Filtreau Excellent Bio Drum 100 – Gravity Fed

A long drum for a high-flow gravity-fed filtration system

The Excellent Bio Drum 100 Gravity is the long-drum option for a high-flow pond-filtration system. Its drum is 650 mm in diameter and 800 mm long, providing a larger mechanical stage than the shorter Bio Drum 60 while retaining an 850 mm-wide housing.

Two 80W high-output UV-C units and an internal wash pump are included. The gravity-fed maximum is 100,000 litres/hour, so this is a component for a deliberately engineered pond circuit rather than a filter to choose on pond volume alone.

A larger screen with automatic waste removal

Water passes through the 120-micron screen, leaving suspended solids behind. The level-operated controller starts the motor and wash pump when cleaning is needed. The spray bar rinses the rotating drum and sends collected debris through the waste channel.

At this flow, the waste arrangement deserves as much care as the clean-water plumbing. Removed material needs a clear discharge route, and the channel must be accessible for inspection. Regular checks of screen condition and spray pattern remain part of ownership.

Designing the whole filtration train

Seven 110 mm inlets and four outlets allow several drain, skimmer and clean-side branches. Account for their combined performance, operating levels and isolation requirements. A single restrictive section can limit the circuit well before the drum’s maximum flow is reached.

The biological treatment must be sized separately for the pond’s feeding and stocking demand. Mature media, oxygen supply and retention time matter alongside mechanical flow. The Excellent Combi 80/100 XXL Gravity is the comparison where integrated, dedicated media chambers are wanted in a larger body.

Twin UV-C and service planning

The twin high-output UV units help control suspended algae. Both need access for lamp and quartz servicing, and their exact HO components should be retained in the maintenance records. Wattage alone is not a compatibility check for replacement lamps.

The 1,575 × 850 × 780 mm body needs a supported base and space around the larger pipe manifold. Plan delivery access and lid clearance before enclosing the filter area. Good service access matters more, not less, as system size increases.

Comparing the configuration

If less flow is needed, the Bio Drum 60 Gravity keeps the same drum diameter in a shorter housing. If dirty water is pumped into the filter, choose the pump-fed Bio Drum 100, whose flow limit is different.

Commission below maximum output, observe draw-down and rinse behaviour and increase circulation only within the limits of the full system. Follow the Excellent manual for electrical isolation and safe inspection of the drum and UV equipment.
