The quartz sleeve is the clear barrier between a pond UV-C lamp and the water. It keeps the lamp dry while allowing useful UV-C energy to pass into the water around it. Ordinary glass is not a suitable substitute because its UV transmission and thermal behaviour are different.

Why Clean Quartz Matters

Hard-water scale, biofilm and iron staining reduce UV-C transmission even when the lamp is new. The result can look like a failed bulb: green water returns, exposure falls and the filter has less treated algae to capture.

Use a cleaner approved for the sleeve and its seals, rinse thoroughly and handle the tube with clean hands. Do not scrape it with metal or an abrasive pad that can scratch or weaken it.

Match the Exact UV, Not Just the Wattage

Start with manufacturer, model family, wattage and generation. Then compare overall length, external diameter, closed or open end, collars, locating shoulders and O-rings. A 55W sleeve for one UV family is not automatically compatible with another 55W unit.

For submersible amalgam systems, also identify the mounting connector and whether the lamp and quartz are supplied separately or as a matched assembly.

Safe Removal and Refitting

  1. Isolate electrical power and stop or drain the water circuit.
  2. Let a hot lamp and sleeve cool before handling.
  3. Support the quartz evenly; never lever one edge with a screwdriver.
  4. Clean the seal grooves and fit the correct new or serviceable O-rings.
  5. Tighten retainers evenly by hand to the manufacturer’s instruction.
  6. Leak-test with the power still isolated, then restore normal operation.

Discard any sleeve with a crack, chip, deep scratch or cloudy damage that cleaning cannot remove.

Our advice: order the lamp, sleeve and seals together when servicing an older unit. It avoids reopening the UV because one tired component was missed.
