White Chinese Marshflower | Mazus reptans ‘Albus’
Beautiful white flowering ground cover for pond margins, bog gardens, and wildlife ponds
White Chinese Marshflower (Mazus reptans ‘Albus’) is a charming low growing marginal pond plant that creates a carpet of bright green foliage topped with delicate white flowers throughout late spring and summer. Perfect for softening pond edges, filling gaps between larger marginal plants, and creating a natural transition between water and land, this attractive creeping perennial is a fantastic choice for wildlife ponds, bog gardens, streams, and damp borders.
Originating from the Himalayan region, Mazus reptans ‘Albus’ is well adapted to UK conditions and forms a dense mat of small toothed green leaves that remain attractive for much of the year. During mild winters the foliage often remains semi evergreen, providing valuable ground cover and interest when many other pond plants have died back.
From May through to August, White Chinese Marshflower produces masses of elegant white tubular flowers that rise just above the foliage. These delicate blooms attract bees, hoverflies, and other pollinating insects, helping support biodiversity around the pond. The bright white flowers also create a striking contrast against the rich green leaves, making this plant particularly effective when used around darker pond edging materials or amongst larger foliage plants.
One of the biggest advantages of Mazus reptans ‘Albus’ is its versatility. It thrives in moist soil, boggy areas, damp borders, and shallow pond margins where the basket can sit in up to 5 cm of water. Its creeping growth habit makes it excellent for covering bare soil and helping to naturally blend pond shelves into the surrounding landscape.
Despite its spreading nature, White Chinese Marshflower remains relatively easy to manage and is far less aggressive than many other creeping marginal plants. It works beautifully alongside Water Forget Me Not, Creeping Jenny, Acorus species, and other low growing pond plants to create a natural pond edge.
The dense foliage also provides shelter for frogs, toads, newts, and beneficial insects, making it a valuable addition to wildlife friendly ponds. It can even tolerate occasional light foot traffic, making it suitable for planting along paths and stepping stone areas near the water’s edge.
Easy to grow, highly ornamental, and beneficial for wildlife, White Chinese Marshflower is one of the best low growing pond plants for creating a soft, natural look around ponds and water gardens.
