Bog Arum
Elegant white flowering marginal plant for pond edges and bog gardens
Bog Arum, also known as Calla palustris, is a beautiful and distinctive marginal pond plant that brings a refined, natural look to pond edges and wetland planting areas. With its glossy heart shaped leaves and elegant white flowers, it creates a calm and balanced appearance that works perfectly in both formal and wildlife ponds.
Flowering from early to mid summer, typically between June and August, Bog Arum produces striking white spathes that surround a soft yellow central spike. These unusual flowers are not only visually appealing but also play an important ecological role, attracting a range of pollinators including flies and even snails, which assist with pollination. This makes it an excellent addition for anyone looking to encourage biodiversity within their pond environment.
The rich green foliage forms a dense carpet of broad, heart shaped leaves that sit just above the water surface. This provides excellent ground cover around pond margins, helping to soften edges while offering shelter and protection for amphibians, insects, and other aquatic life. Frogs, newts and beneficial insects will all benefit from the habitat this plant creates.
Bog Arum thrives in consistently moist to wet soils and is perfectly suited to shallow pond margins, damp ground, and bog gardens. It grows well in both full sun and partial shade, making it a flexible choice for a wide range of planting schemes. Once established, it is a hardy and reliable perennial that will return year after year with minimal effort.
This plant is ideal for creating a natural looking pond with strong wildlife value while still offering subtle elegance. Please note that all parts of the plant are harmful if eaten and can cause irritation, so care should be taken around pets and children.
