White Lobelia | Lobelia siphilitica alba
A graceful marginal pond plant with upright stems, fresh green foliage and elegant white flower spikes in late summer.
Elegant white flowers for shallow pond margins, damp borders and bog gardens
White Lobelia, botanically known as Lobelia siphilitica alba, is an attractive marginal pond plant grown for its upright habit, fresh green leaves and beautiful white flower spikes. It brings height, brightness and late season interest to pond shelves, damp borders, bog gardens and wildlife friendly planting schemes.
This plant is a white flowered form of Lobelia siphilitica, a clump forming herbaceous perennial with strong upright stems and lance shaped green leaves. In late summer, it produces tall spikes of bright white flowers that stand above the foliage, creating a clean and elegant display around the waterline. The white flowers are especially useful for lifting darker pond edges, shaded corners and mixed marginal planting schemes.
White Lobelia is best grown as a marginal plant rather than a true aquatic plant. It enjoys reliably moist soil and can be positioned in very shallow water, making it suitable for pond shelves where the top of the basket sits just below the water surface. It can also be grown outside the pond in damp ground, bog gardens or moisture retentive borders. This makes it a versatile choice for planting around ponds, streams, water features and wet garden areas.
The recommended planting depth is 0 cm to 5 cm, measured from the top of the aquatic basket to the water surface. It is important not to place White Lobelia too deep, especially when supplied as a smaller 9 cm plant. Young plants establish best in shallow water or damp soil before being moved into slightly wetter conditions if required.
White Lobelia grows slowly to steadily and usually reaches around 60 cm to 90 cm tall. Its upright stems create useful vertical structure without becoming too heavy or overpowering. It works well with lower growing marginal plants, waterlilies, ornamental grasses and other pond edge plants where contrast in height and flower colour is needed.
This plant is also useful for wildlife friendly gardens. The flowers can attract pollinating insects, while the foliage adds cover around pond margins. The shallow water zone is an important area for frogs, newts and insects moving between land and water, and marginal planting helps make that edge feel safer and more natural.
White Lobelia is hardy in most UK areas and will naturally die back in winter. Allow the foliage to fade and die back naturally where possible, as this helps the plant form winter buds. Tidy old growth once it has collapsed, then look for fresh new shoots in spring.

Reasons to buy White Lobelia
White Lobelia is a lovely choice if you want a marginal pond plant with clean white flowers and an upright, elegant shape. It adds height without looking too large or coarse, making it suitable for small, medium and larger garden ponds.
It is especially valuable because it flowers later in the season. Many pond plants flower earlier in summer, so White Lobelia helps extend interest into August and September.
The white flowers work beautifully in mixed pond planting schemes. They contrast well with purple, blue, yellow and pink flowering marginals, while also standing out against green foliage and dark pond water.
White Lobelia is also a flexible plant. It can be grown in very shallow water, damp pond edges, bog gardens or moisture retentive borders, making it useful for both aquatic and pondside planting.
Care instructions
Plant White Lobelia in full sun or partial shade. It will usually flower best in a bright position, but partial shade is suitable, especially around pond edges where the soil remains moist.
For pond planting, place the aquatic basket on a shallow shelf with the top of the basket between 0 cm and 5 cm below the water surface. Do not plant too deep, as the crown should remain close to the surface.
Planting depth is measured from the top of the basket to the water surface.
For 9 cm plants, repot into a larger aquatic basket before placing into the pond. Smaller plants should be started in very shallow water, no deeper than around 25 percent of the maximum recommended planting depth, until they are mature enough to cope with wetter conditions.
1 litre plants can usually be placed directly onto a shallow shelf, although repotting into a larger basket can be helpful for taller plants to improve stability and allow more root room.
3 litre and 5 litre plants are larger and more established, so they can normally be placed up to the maximum recommended planting depth.
In damp borders or bog gardens, plant into fertile, moisture retentive soil. Keep watered during dry weather, especially during the first growing season.
Trim only to tidy during the growing season. At the end of the year, allow the foliage to die back naturally where possible, then remove collapsed stems once the plant has finished storing energy and forming winter buds.
Flowering period
White Lobelia usually flowers in August and September, with upright spikes of bright white flowers held above the green foliage.
In warm seasons or sheltered positions, flowering may begin slightly earlier. Flowering performance will depend on plant maturity, sunlight, moisture and growing conditions.
The flowers are the main ornamental feature of the plant and provide valuable late summer interest around the pond edge.

Your plant on arrival
Your White Lobelia may arrive in an aquatic basket or a standard 9 cm nursery pot, depending on the size selected.
Plants supplied in aquatic baskets are planted in suitable aquatic compost and can normally be placed directly onto a shallow pond shelf at the recommended depth.
Plants supplied in 9 cm nursery pots should be repotted into a suitable aquatic basket before being placed in the pond. We recommend using a larger aquatic basket with aquatic compost to give the plant room to establish.
Aquatic basket guidance:
• 9 cm plants should be repotted before pond placement
• 1 litre plants can normally be placed directly onto a shallow shelf, although repotting can improve stability for taller plants
• 3 litre and 5 litre plants are more established and can usually be placed at the full recommended depth
If planting into a pond, top dress the basket with pea gravel or aquatic gravel to help keep the compost in place and reduce clouding.
Dispatching your pond plants
Pond plants are carefully selected, watered and packed to help protect them during delivery. As living plants, the size, foliage amount and flowering stage will naturally vary throughout the season.
White Lobelia may arrive with limited visible growth early in the season. This is normal and the plant should develop as temperatures rise and conditions improve.
Plants are not always supplied in flower. Flowering depends on the season, plant maturity and current nursery growth.
In autumn or winter, the plant may be cut back or naturally dormant, with little visible top growth. This is normal for a hardy herbaceous perennial and fresh shoots should return in spring.
Upon arrival, unpack the plant promptly and check that the compost is moist. Place it into the pond, damp border or a temporary tray of water as soon as practical. Do not allow the root ball or aquatic compost to dry out.
