Water Chestnut (Trapa natans)

A unique floating pond plant with striking red tinged foliage, perfect for adding interest, shade and natural algae control to your pond.

Water Chestnut (Trapa natans) is a distinctive and eye catching floating pond plant, known for its attractive rosettes of toothed leaves that often develop rich red tones as they mature. With its bold surface presence and practical benefits, it is an excellent addition to wildlife ponds and ornamental water features.

Each plant forms a floating rosette of glossy, triangular leaves that typically spread between 10 cm and 20 cm across. The foliage is often a mix of deep green and red tinges, creating a striking contrast on the water’s surface. As the plant grows, it produces a network of submerged stems and roots that help it remain buoyant while drawing nutrients directly from the water.

During late summer, Water Chestnut produces small white flowers that sit delicately among the foliage. While subtle, these flowers add seasonal interest and contribute to the plant’s overall appeal. Beneath the surface, the plant is actively working to improve pond health by absorbing excess nutrients such as nitrates, helping to reduce algae growth and maintain clearer water.

As autumn approaches, Water Chestnut may produce hard nuts that sink to the bottom. These can germinate the following spring where winter and water conditions are suitable, but reliable return is not guaranteed in the UK. The plant is therefore best regarded as a tender seasonal aquatic rather than a dependable permanent feature.

Early in the season, Water Chestnut may be supplied as nuts rather than established rosettes. Place the nuts in a suitable basket or shallow area of aquatic soil so developing roots can anchor, then allow the shoots to reach the surface as the water warms.

Water Chestnut thrives in still or slow moving water and prefers full sun to partial shade. It is best used as a summer plant in UK ponds, as it is not frost hardy and may need to be treated as an annual or overwintered indoors in suitable conditions.

In addition to its visual appeal and water quality benefits, Water Chestnut provides excellent shelter for wildlife. Fish, amphibians and aquatic insects benefit from the shaded areas and protective cover created by its floating leaves.

For pond owners looking to add something a little different, Water Chestnut is a fantastic choice that combines beauty, functionality and ecological value.
