Virginalis Waterlily (Nymphaea ‘Virginalis’)

A beautifully fragrant white waterlily with elegant blooms and lush foliage, perfect for large ponds and creating a calm, natural water garden setting.

Virginalis Waterlily (Nymphaea ‘Virginalis’) is a classic and highly reliable variety, well known for its elegant white flowers, soft fragrance and strong growth. It is an excellent choice for larger ponds where you want both visual impact and practical benefits such as shading and algae control.

This variety produces stunning cup shaped white flowers with warm golden centres, creating a bright and clean contrast against the dark water surface. The blooms appear from June through to September and open fully in the sunlight, offering a peaceful and timeless look that suits both formal and natural pond designs. The gentle fragrance adds an extra layer of enjoyment, especially during warm summer days.

The foliage is equally impressive. New leaves emerge with a subtle purple bronze tint before maturing into rich green floating pads. These leaves spread widely across the surface, helping to reduce sunlight penetration into the water. This natural shading plays a key role in limiting algae growth, improving water clarity and creating a more stable pond environment.

With a spread of around 90 cm to 120 cm, Virginalis is best suited to medium to large ponds. It is a vigorous grower, capable of covering a good surface area, making it particularly useful for larger water features where strong coverage is needed. Because of this, it is not recommended for very small ponds or containers.

Virginalis thrives in still water and performs best in full sun, where it will produce the highest number of flowers. Once established, it is low maintenance and reliably returns each year, making it a dependable long term addition to your pond.

Beyond its beauty, this waterlily provides real ecological value. The leaves create shaded areas where fish and amphibians can shelter, while the flowers attract pollinators. It plays an important role in supporting biodiversity and maintaining a healthy pond ecosystem.

If you are looking for a classic white waterlily with fragrance, strong growth and excellent coverage, Virginalis is a superb choice for larger ponds.
