Colonel A J Welch Waterlily (Nymphaea ‘Colonel A J Welch’)
Striking canary yellow blooms rising above the water, ideal for deep ponds, large water features and lakes.
The Colonel A J Welch Waterlily (Nymphaea ‘Colonel A J Welch’) is a powerful and reliable aquatic plant, specifically suited to deeper ponds and larger water environments. Known for its vibrant canary yellow flowers that rise above the surface, this variety creates a bold and eye catching display throughout the summer months.
Flowering from June to September, the blooms are cup shaped with a soft yellow tone that stands out beautifully against the darker green foliage. Unlike many waterlilies that sit flat on the water, this variety often produces flowers that sit slightly above the surface, adding height and structure to your pond planting.
This waterlily is particularly well suited to deeper planting depths, thriving in water up to 150 cm deep. This makes it an excellent choice for large garden ponds, natural swimming ponds and lakes where other varieties may struggle. With a spread of around 70 cm to 100 cm, it provides generous coverage while still maintaining a balanced and manageable growth habit.
The lush green lily pads play an important role in maintaining a healthy pond. They help shade the water, reducing sunlight penetration and limiting algae growth. This creates a more stable and natural environment for fish and aquatic life, while also helping to keep water temperatures cooler during warmer periods.
Beyond its visual impact, Colonel A J Welch supports pond biodiversity. The floating leaves offer shelter for fish and amphibians, while the flowers attract pollinators such as bees. This makes it a fantastic choice for anyone looking to create a thriving, wildlife friendly pond.
Hardy and easy to maintain, this variety performs well in full sun and still water conditions. Once established, it requires minimal upkeep and will return year after year with reliable flowering.
If you have a deeper pond or large water feature and want a strong, vibrant yellow waterlily that delivers both beauty and function, Colonel A J Welch is an excellent choice.
