Black Princess Waterlily (Nymphaea ‘Black Princess’)
A premium dark waterlily with deep crimson blooms and a striking black sheen, perfect for creating a bold and elegant focal point in your pond.
Black Princess Waterlily (Nymphaea ‘Black Princess’) is one of the most dramatic and luxurious waterlily varieties available, known for its rich, deep crimson flowers that appear almost black in certain lighting conditions. This stunning plant is ideal for creating a strong focal point in your pond, adding depth, contrast and sophistication to the water’s surface.
The flowers are large, peony style blooms with multiple layers of velvety petals. As they open in full sunlight, the deep red tones intensify, often giving off a near black sheen that makes this variety truly stand out. Flowering reliably from June through to September, Black Princess offers a long season of colour and visual interest.
The foliage complements the blooms perfectly. The floating leaves emerge with subtle bronze tones before maturing into a rich green, sometimes with light mottling. These broad leaves spread across the water surface, providing natural shade that helps reduce sunlight penetration. This plays an important role in controlling algae growth and maintaining a healthier pond environment.
With a spread of around 70 cm to 80 cm, Black Princess is well suited to medium sized ponds or larger garden features. It provides excellent surface coverage without becoming unmanageable, making it a great choice for those looking to combine strong visual impact with practical benefits.
This waterlily thrives in still water and performs best in full sun, where it will produce the darkest flowers and most consistent blooms. As well as its aesthetic appeal, it supports pond wildlife by offering shelter for fish, shade for amphibians and resting areas for pollinators.
Fully hardy in UK conditions, Black Princess will return year after year with minimal maintenance. Its combination of bold colour, elegant form and reliable growth makes it a standout choice for both new and established ponds.
If you are looking to create a truly eye catching feature in your pond, Black Princess Waterlily is an exceptional choice.
