The SuperFish TopClear 5000 combines a pressure filter with a built-in 7W UVC. It is the filter-only option for a system with a separately selected pond pump, using foam to collect debris and Bio-balls as a surface for filter bacteria.

Three stages in a compact pressure filter

The TopClear 5000 brings mechanical filtration, biological media and ultraviolet clarification into one housing. Water passes through foam that collects suspended debris, while the Bio-balls provide surfaces on which filter bacteria can establish. The integrated 7W UVC provides the clarification stage. Each part has a different role, which is why both cleaning the mechanical media and looking after the biological media matter.

This is the filter and UVC unit supplied without a pump. It allows you to retain a suitable existing pump or choose one for the installation, within the filter’s stated limits. If you need both items, the TopClear 5000 filter and pump kit is a separate listing. Compare the included equipment as well as the model number when choosing between them.

Is the 5000 the right size?

The manufacturer’s maximum pond-content rating is 5,000 litres. Its maximum pump-capacity figure is 2,500 litres per hour; these are two different specifications. A filter’s pond-volume label is not a direction to connect a pump of the same number. Check fish stocking, feeding and the proposed circulation when selecting the system, particularly for koi ponds.

The TopClear 10000 pressure filter is rated for a maximum 3,500-litre-per-hour pump and has a 9W UVC, while the TopClear 15000 has a 5,000-litre-per-hour maximum pump specification and 11W UVC. Those larger models also use different hose connections and housings, so an upgrade involves checking the pipework and available space as well as capacity.

Connections and installation layout

The 5000 housing measures 34 ×34 ×40cm. Its connections are arranged on the lid, allowing the filter body to be concealed beside the pond while keeping the working connections accessible. SuperFish describes partial burial as an installation option for the range. Leave access for the lid, cleaning outlet and future servicing rather than enclosing the unit permanently beneath paving or a fixed cover.

The connection steps are listed as 14, 20 and 25mm. The manual specifically describes using 20mm pond hose on the TopClear 5000 so that the flow indicator remains visible. When adapting a stepped hosetail, remove it from the filter before cutting it to the chosen hose diameter. Check the complete route from pump to inlet and from outlet back to the pond before fixing the unit in position.

The installation manual specifies at least 50cm separation from the pond and a maximum water head of 2m. Respect the pump-capacity limit and keep the return outlet unrestricted: blocking it or reducing its diameter can raise pressure in the housing. These details are especially relevant when planning a raised return or concealing the filter below the finished pond edge.

Auto Clean Wash and routine checks

The flow indicator provides a practical prompt to inspect the filter. SuperFish recommends checking flow weekly, with cleaning when delivery falls. A new installation or heavily polluted pond may need more frequent backwashing while the initial debris load is being collected. Check the actual condition rather than assuming every pond will follow the same cleaning interval.

Auto Clean Wash uses reverse flow to flush accumulated waste from the sponge through the CLEAN connection. Plan a suitable waste-hose route that you can use without dismantling the main return. The manual requires the CLEAN outlet’s end cap to be restored after the cleaning procedure. An optional backwash valve can make access more convenient; the exact TopClear 5000 reference is 06020717. It is a separate accessory, not a part included with this listing.

Foam, Bio-balls and annual servicing

SuperFish identifies the replacement foam for this model as the TopClear 5000 three-piece sponge set. The larger TopClear models use a different sponge listing, so use the full model reference when sourcing replacements. Backwashing helps with routine waste removal but does not replace the periodic opening and inspection described in the manual.

During a full service, treat the biological media separately: the manual specifies pond water for rinsing the Bio-balls to preserve their established bacteria. Check the housing seal and connections when reassembling. The manufacturer’s schedule includes annual sponge replacement, or sooner if its condition requires it, alongside UVC and quartz inspection. Isolate both pump and filter from the electrical supply before maintenance.

UVC version and winter care

TopClear units exist in red-lock and green-lock versions, with separate manufacturer manuals. Identify the fitted version before ordering electrical or quartz components. Lamp wattage alone is not a complete parts-compatibility check. Inspect operation through the designated indicator and follow the appropriate supplied procedure for servicing the UV assembly.

The manual directs users to switch off the UVC when there is no water flow to prevent overheating. If the system is taken out of use over winter, the filter needs protection from freezing in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions. Keep these access and drainage needs in mind when planning a concealed installation.
