The filter and pump supplied together

This package combines the TopClear 5000 pressure filter, its integrated 7W ultraviolet clarifier and the Pond-Flow ECO 2000 pump. The filter collects suspended debris in foam and houses Bio-balls for biological filtration. The supplied pump provides circulation through that equipment, making the kit a convenient starting point for a small ornamental pond installation.

If a suitable pump is already in place, the TopClear 5000 filter-only listing supplies the filtration unit without another pump. This kit includes the named pump, but the hose route still needs to be planned for your pond. Measure the required lengths and check the connections at both ends before ordering installation accessories.

Understanding the pump and pond ratings

SuperFish gives the filter a maximum pond-content rating of 5,000 litres. The supplied pump has a maximum flow of 2,000 litres per hour and consumes 25W; the 5000 model name is not its pump-flow figure. Fish stocking, feeding and debris loads remain relevant when choosing filtration. A heavily stocked koi pond may require a different system from an ornamental pond with the same water volume.

The Pond-Flow ECO 2000 has a maximum head of 1.9m. Maximum head and maximum flow are different ends of a pump’s performance range, so it will not deliver 2,000 litres per hour at a 1.9m lift. Hose friction, fittings and the filter also affect working flow. Plan a practical, direct route and assess the return height before positioning the equipment.

Equipment dimensions and connections

The filter housing measures 34 × 34 × 40cm, while the supplied pump measures 17.4 × 8.5 × 10.4cm. The pump has a 10m cable. These separate dimensions help with planning both the submerged pump location and the space beside the pond for the filter. Leave clearance for removing the filter lid and servicing the pump rather than measuring only the footprints.

The filter’s inlet and outlet steps are 14, 20 and 25mm. The Pond-Flow ECO 2000 pump has a 20, 25 and 32mm stepped outlet. SuperFish’s filter manual describes 20mm hose for the TopClear 5000 so that the flow indicator remains visible. Match the hose route to both components. Remove a stepped connection before cutting it to size and secure the fitted hose with suitable clamps.

Positioning the pump and filter

The pump is designed to operate submerged in pond water. Its manual specifies a stable, level position at least 20cm below the surface, with a maximum immersion depth of 2m. The 2m immersion limit is separate from the pump’s 1.9m maximum head. Never allow the pump to run dry, and lift it by its handle rather than its cable.

The filter is installed beside the pond with at least 50cm separation according to the TopClear instructions. Connections on the lid allow the body to be partly concealed in the ground while remaining accessible. Keep the return outlet open and unrestricted, protect electrical connections from moisture and use the instructed drip-loop arrangement. Both units must be disconnected from their supplies before maintenance.

Backwashing the TopClear 5000

Check the flow indicator weekly and clean when delivery falls. During an initial clean-up of a dirty pond, the manufacturer notes that daily flushing may be needed. Auto Clean Wash reverses the water through the sponge and releases accumulated waste through the CLEAN outlet. Arrange a suitable waste-hose route before starting the procedure.

Refit the CLEAN outlet end cap after backwashing, following the supplied instructions. A separate backwash valve is available under manufacturer reference 06020717 for the TopClear 5000. The larger TopClear models use a different valve reference. The optional valve is not included in this listing.

Looking after the foam, Bio-balls and UVC

The replacement foam is the TopClear 5000 three-piece sponge set. SuperFish recommends annual foam replacement, or sooner when needed. During a full service, rinse the Bio-balls in pond water to help retain their established bacteria; the manual gives different cleaning instructions for the mechanical foam. Check the housing seal and all connections when reassembling.

The 7W UVC needs periodic operation checks, annual lamp replacement and quartz inspection and cleaning. Check the fitted red-lock or green-lock hardware generation before buying internal spares. The TopClear manufacturer page provides both manuals. A visibly lit lamp does not confirm that its useful UV output is unchanged.

Pump maintenance and seasonal care

The Pond-Flow ECO instructions recommend cleaning the pump at least twice a year, including removal of scale and inspection of the rotor. Its thermal protection can stop an overheating motor and restart it after cooling, so disconnect it and investigate the cause rather than relying on repeated automatic restarts.

For winter shutdown, follow the separate pump and filter instructions for removal and frost-free storage. Keep access to both units when landscaping the pond edge. If you need a larger package, compare the TopClear 10000 kit, which uses a different pump, larger filter housing and 9W UVC.
