The SuperFish TopClear 10000 combines a pressure filter with a built-in 9W UVC. It is the filter-only option for a system with a separately selected pond pump, using foam to collect debris and Bio-balls as a surface for filter bacteria.

A filter for a separately selected pond pump

The TopClear 10000 is the middle filter-only model in this range, with a 9W ultraviolet clarifier and a manufacturer maximum pond-volume rating of 10,000 litres. It combines debris-catching foam with Bio-balls for biological filtration. Buying the filter separately is useful when a suitable pump is already installed or when the pump needs to be chosen around the particular hose route and return height.

A pump is required to move water through the housing and is not included here. If you need a paired package, the TopClear 10000 filter and pump kit includes a Pond-Flow ECO 3000. That kit’s stated pump flow is 2,900 litres per hour; the filter’s own maximum pump-capacity specification is 3,500 litres per hour. Check which specification you are comparing when choosing between the two listings.

Planning capacity, flow and space

The 10,000-litre pond figure is an upper manufacturer rating, rather than a stocking allowance for every pond of that volume. Fish numbers, feeding and the amount of debris entering the water all affect the work the filter has to do. For a koi pond, assess those demands together with the circulation layout before settling on the size.

The housing measures 35 × 44 × 46cm. Compared with the TopClear 5000, the 10000 has a larger body, larger connection steps and a higher permitted pump capacity. The TopClear 15000 has an 11W UVC and a taller, 58cm housing. Leave space for lifting the lid and handling the media as well as enough room for the filter to stand.

Hose connections and the return route

The inlet and outlet have 25, 32 and 40mm connection steps. The manufacturer’s installation instructions describe 32mm pond hose for the 10000, 15000 and 18000 so that the flow indicator remains visible. When cutting a stepped connection for the selected hose, remove it from the filter first. Secure the hoses with suitable clamps and check the assembled system for leaks before leaving it running.

SuperFish specifies a maximum water head of 2m and warns against exceeding the maximum pump capacity. The outlet must remain open and must not be reduced in diameter: a restricted return can increase pressure inside the filter. Plan the inlet, return and cleaning hose as separate routes, with no permanent obstruction preventing access to the lid or cleaning connection.

The filter should sit beside the pond, at least 50cm away according to the manual. The range can be partly concealed in the ground because its working connections are on the lid. Keep the plugs and sockets protected from moisture and arrange the cable with a drip loop as instructed. Concealing the body should still leave the electrical equipment, lid and hose connections accessible.

Using the flow indicator and backwash function

The flow indicator helps you see when delivery has fallen and the foam needs cleaning. The recommended routine is a weekly flow check, with backwashing when needed. During the first clean-up of a dirty pond, the manual notes that flushing may be required daily. The observed debris load and flow are more useful than assuming that every pond will need the same interval.

Auto Clean Wash reverses the water through the sponge and sends waste through the CLEAN outlet. A temporary waste hose allows this dirty water to be directed away from the pond. Follow the supplied operating sequence and refit the outlet’s end cap after cleaning. SuperFish offers a separate backwash valve, reference 06020719, for the TopClear 10000, 15000 and 18000. It is an optional accessory and is not included with this filter.

Servicing the mechanical and biological media

Backwashing is the routine cleaning method, but the filter also needs periodic opening for inspection. Disconnect both the pond pump and filter from the electricity supply first. When releasing the clamps, the manual describes working across opposite sides of the lid. Keep the seal clean, check it for damage and make sure the lid is seated correctly when reassembling.

The foam and Bio-balls need different treatment. The manufacturer allows the foam and internal dividing plate to be rinsed with clean tap water, but specifies pond water for the Bio-balls to help retain their established bacteria. It recommends replacing the foam yearly, or more often when required. The listed replacement is the TopClear 10/15/18 sponge, rather than the smaller 5000 three-piece set.

Looking after the 9W UVC

Check lamp operation through the designated indicator. The manual calls for a monthly check and annual lamp replacement, because a lamp can remain visibly lit after its useful ultraviolet output has declined. Quartz cleaning and inspection also form part of the annual service. Allow the lamp to cool after disconnection before opening the assembly.

TopClear products have red-lock and green-lock hardware generations. Match internal replacement parts to the actual version as well as the 10000 model and 9W rating. The manufacturer’s TopClear page provides both instruction sets. Switch off the UVC whenever there is no flow; when the system is unused in winter, the manual directs removal of the filter to prevent freezing damage.
