How EconoBead filtration works

Biologically, it provides surface area for nitrifying bacteria, which convert ammonia from fish waste into nitrite and then nitrate. Good bead filter performance still depends on oxygen, stable water chemistry and regular cleaning, but the compact design gives a lot of filtration potential in a small footprint.

A bead filter should ideally be protected by suitable pre-filtration. A sieve, drum filter or other mechanical pre-filter reduces the amount of heavy waste entering the bead vessel. This keeps cleaning easier and helps the bead media work more effectively. A UV clarifier is also normally recommended to deal with green water algae, as bead filters are not UV systems by themselves.

Cleaning and maintenance

EconoBead filters are cleaned using the multiport valve and backwash process. This allows trapped waste to be flushed out of the filter instead of being broken down inside the pond system. Cleaning frequency depends on stocking level, feeding, season, pre-filtration and pond debris. During heavy feeding periods, koi ponds usually need more frequent cleaning than lightly stocked ornamental ponds.

UV sizing and maintenance notes
