Japanese Mat (1.2m x 1m) Economy

This economy Japanese filter mat is intended for custom koi-pond filter chambers where water must pass evenly through a durable, high-surface-area stage. It can support beneficial bacteria while also intercepting suspended material, depending on whether it is installed submerged, in a shower or as a fitted cartridge.

Filter media only works across the water that reaches it. Pack it too tightly or leave gaps around the edge and the flow will bypass the intended surface. Measure the chamber and plan support, retention and cleaning access before cutting or stacking the media.

Installing it in a filter

Arrange the media so dirty water cannot take a shortcut around the sides. Support heavy wet media securely and make individual sections removable; a giant tightly wedged block is almost impossible to clean without disturbing the whole filter.

New biological media takes time to mature. Preserve healthy existing media where possible, maintain oxygen and test ammonia and nitrite after a major change. Rinse mature media in pond water rather than chlorinated tap water.

Our practical view: We value media that can be lifted and inspected. A slightly smaller removable cartridge with sealed edges is usually more effective than a chamber packed so tightly that it is never cleaned.
