Pump and flow rate guidance

With a stainless steel spillway, the right flow depends on how it is being used. A planted veggie filter or return spillway normally wants a calm, even turnover rather than an aggressive jet of water. A display waterfall can be run harder, but too much flow can increase splashing and may disturb planting media if the spillway is being used as part of a filter bed.

As a practical starting point, size the pump so there is enough real flow at the spillway after head height and pipe losses, then fine tune the result on site. A variable flow pond pump makes this much easier because the output can be adjusted without repeatedly changing the pump or restricting the system heavily with valves.

Pipework and installation extras

Build the filter bed so water can enter evenly, pass through the planted area and exit across the full width of the stainless steel lip.
