Pump and flow rate guidance

Water blade pump sizing is one of the most common areas where people get caught out. The important figure is not simply the maximum flow printed on the pump box, but the actual flow reaching the water blade after vertical lift, hose size, bends and fittings have all taken effect. As a guide, allow around 1,250 litres per hour for every 100mm of blade width for a strong, even sheet of water. Wider blades and longer spout projections need more water to keep the sheet full and consistent.

Blade width Suggested starting flow at the blade
200mm Approx. 2,500 LPH
300mm Approx. 3,750 LPH
400mm Approx. 5,000 LPH
500mm Approx. 6,250 LPH
600mm Approx. 7,500 LPH

Because head height can reduce the delivered flow significantly, we strongly recommend choosing a controllable pump where possible. A variable flow pond pump lets you oversize slightly to overcome losses, then turn the flow down until the blade looks right. Good options include the Evolution Aqua Varipump 10000, PondXpert VariFlow SINE 10000 and AquaForte DM Vario S 10000, depending on the width of the blade and the height of the installation.

Hose, clips and installation extras

Most pump-fed water blades work best with a short, neat run of correctly sized flexible pond hose. For simple installations, standard flexible pond hose is usually suitable. For higher flow rates, longer runs or where you want to reduce friction losses, the heavy duty flexible pond hose is the better option because the smoother bore helps maintain more of the pump’s output.

Always secure hose tails with suitable stainless steel clips. These products are supplied with hosetail fittings depending on the model, but the hose and clips should be chosen to match your pump and pipework layout. We recommend using stainless steel hose clips on flexible hose connections, especially where the blade is built into a wall and access may be awkward later. A pair of 20-50mm stainless steel hose clips has also been added as an optional extra on the pump-fed water blade pages for convenience.

Compare other water blade options

Choosing the right water blade comes down to the installation style, spout projection, inlet position and the look you want to create. These related options may help you compare the full range before ordering.
