Rockways Atlantis Single Step Garden Waterfall
A compact sandstone-effect cascade for a pond edge or hidden reservoir
The Rockways Atlantis Single Step Garden Waterfall adds a defined fall of water to a garden pond without needing a long stream or a large raised rockery. Its sandstone finish suits warm paving, gravel and planted pond margins, while the moulded shape provides a ready-made route for the water. With a footprint of 60 x 43cm and an overall height of 24cm, it is a useful choice where you want a visible cascade but have limited space around the pond.
This is the AMW01P waterfall feature in Sandstone. The pump, hose and collection reservoir are selected separately to suit your installation. It can discharge into an existing pond or form part of a pondless feature with a suitable concealed sump below. Allow more space than the bare footprint when planning the installation. The supporting base, hose route and access for cleaning all need room. The 24cm measurement describes the feature itself; the finished height above the water depends on the base you build and where the outlet sits relative to the pond.
Planning a natural-looking pond edge
Start by looking at the waterfall from the place where you normally sit or stand to enjoy the pond. A small adjustment in direction can make the falling water much easier to see. Position the outlet so the water returns inside the pond liner or collection area, allowing for splashes as well as the main stream. Avoid setting the lip so close to surrounding paving that water can escape onto the ground.
Place the feature temporarily before fixing the surrounding landscaping. This lets you check the proportions against the pond and leave a clear route for the hose. Planting and stones can soften the edges, but keep leaves and soil away from the water channel. Decorative stones should dress the installation rather than carry the weight of an insecurely balanced waterfall.
Building a stable support
Rockways’ installation guidance describes supporting its waterfalls with suitable blocks, bricks or sleepers. The feature needs a firm base, with a slight fall from the back towards the outlet so water travels in the intended direction. Check it is level across the water route rather than tilted to one side, which can concentrate the flow against an edge.
Run water through the feature before finishing the backfill or planting. Watch where the water collects and how it leaves the front edge, then adjust the support if necessary. This early test is much easier than correcting the angle after everything has been landscaped. Keep the connection accessible so it can be inspected without dismantling the entire pond edge.
Choosing and connecting a pump
Choose a pump for the complete installation, including the vertical lift from the pond water level to the waterfall inlet and the length of connecting hose. The flow printed on a pump box is usually measured with little or no lift, so it is not necessarily the amount that will reach a raised feature. An adjustable flow is useful when setting the final appearance and reducing splashing.
Match the hose diameter to the actual waterfall connection and the pump outlet. Follow the supplied fitting instructions when opening the connection and preparing any stepped hosetail. Avoid unnecessary sharp bends, keep the hose clear of crushing loads, and secure the connections with suitable clips. Test the joints with the pump running before covering the pipework. If you need help choosing a pump, tell us the planned height, hose length and the effect you want to achieve.
Using the feature without a pond
A pondless installation still needs a watertight reservoir to collect the falling water and supply the pump. The reservoir and its cover must suit the water volume and supporting loads of the design. Keep a practical access point for checking the water level, lifting the pump and clearing debris. A decorative gravel surface should not make routine maintenance impossible.
Check that the collection area catches the full flow at the setting you intend to use. Wind and splashing can increase water loss, so allow room around the fall rather than selecting a basin only as wide as the main stream. Keep the pump submerged as required by its instructions and check the level regularly, particularly during warm or windy weather.
Care, finish and alternatives
Remove fallen leaves and accumulated debris before they obstruct the channel. Clean the pump’s intake as directed by its manufacturer, because restricted flow can change the appearance of the cascade. If the flow weakens, check the water level, intake and hose for a kink or blockage before assuming a larger pump is needed. Follow the pump’s winter-storage instructions whenever the feature is shut down.
The finish is handcrafted, so small shade differences between individual pieces are normal. For a broader sandstone feature, compare the Rockways Atlantis Tiered Cascade. If you want the water to follow a longer curved route, the Atlantis Curved Stream offers a larger footprint. These are alternative shapes; plan their positions and connections individually rather than assuming an interlocking fit.
A slate-effect drop alternative
For a darker finish and a more pronounced drop, compare the Rockways Atlantis Midi Slate Drop Garden Cascade. Its Welsh Slate finish and 69 x 49 x 25cm dimensions offer a different look for a compact pond edge.
