Oase Rockways Becka Falls Step

A pebble-effect cascade for a garden pond or a planned watercourse

The Becka Falls Step is a preformed watercourse element with a rounded, pebble-like surface and a series of shallow levels. It creates the appearance of water passing over a small rocky cascade without having to build the visible channel from separate stones. This is the Step model, Oase reference 76634. It is a different shape from the Becka Falls Drop, so choose the profile that suits the route and effect you want to create.

The pale stone-effect finish includes green shading, giving the surface a weathered appearance from the start. Oase describes the range as robust, weather resistant and suitable for modular use, with colours applied by hand. The photograph shows the shape and finish of this model; hand finishing means that the precise shading can vary between pieces.

Choose the shape around the flow of your garden

A stepped cascade is useful where you want to see water travel across a surface before it reaches the pond. Think about the main viewing position: from a patio, a kitchen window or the approach to the pond. Place the feature so that the water movement is visible from that position, with enough space around the sides to integrate the edges into planting or decorative landscaping.

The moulded channel has its own shape, so plan around the actual element rather than trying to force it into a straight trench. Before making permanent changes to the garden, check the space available for the whole installation, including the support underneath, the hose route and the receiving pond or reservoir. Allow room to reach the water connection and lift the element if maintenance is needed later.

One cascade or part of a longer stream

Oase identifies these as modular watercourse elements. A single piece can form a focal point above a pond, while a carefully planned sequence can extend the visible route of the water. The important part is the transition between pieces: the upper outlet must discharge securely into the lower receiving section, with no route for water to escape behind the installation.

Test the arrangement before fixing surrounding stones or covering joints. Different profiles do not necessarily meet correctly simply because they belong to the same general product category. Check the overlap, levels and return path using the actual pieces. A continuous liner beneath a constructed stream can help return stray water to the pond, but it still needs correct support and an uninterrupted fall towards the receiving water.

Plan the pump and hose as a complete system

The cascade is one part of a circulating water feature. You also need a suitable pump, the correct hose and connections, a water source and a dependable return route. Select the pump by the flow it can deliver at the height of the inlet, allowing for the hose length and fittings. The maximum flow printed on a pump box normally describes a different operating condition from an elevated garden cascade.

A larger pump is not automatically the answer to a weak effect. Restricted hose, tight bends, a dirty intake or an unsuitable connection can reduce the water reaching the feature. Conversely, too much flow can produce unwanted splashing or send water outside the intended channel. Check the cascade’s supplied instructions and the pump’s performance information before finalising the equipment.

Support and position the element securely

Prepare a stable base that supports the cascade without twisting it. The finished position should direct water towards the outlet and back into the pond, rather than creating a low point at one side. Do not use the hose to hold the feature in place. Give the pipework a route that avoids sharp edges and leaves the connection accessible for inspection.

Keep any decorative rocks independently supported. Their weight should not be concentrated on the rim of the moulded feature or used to bend the channel into position. Check the feature’s installation instructions before opening an inlet or making a permanent connection. Dry positioning and a careful trial fit are much easier to adjust than an installation that has already been glued, buried or landscaped.

Check the water return before finishing the surroundings

Run the assembled system and watch the entire water path. Inspect the inlet, side edges, joins and final spill into the pond. Small leaks or persistent splash can gradually lower the reservoir level, even when the waterfall appears to be working. Recheck the arrangement after switching the pump off and restarting it, because water can drain back from the raised sections.

Keep sufficient water around the pump throughout operation and follow its requirements for immersion and electrical installation. Isolate the electrical supply before handling the pump or disconnecting the hose. Once the trial run is satisfactory, finish the surrounding planting and stonework while retaining access to the parts that need occasional cleaning.

Routine care and alternative appearances

Remove leaves and other loose debris before they obstruct the water path or pump intake. If the flow changes, inspect the pump and hose as well as the visible cascade. Follow the manufacturer’s care instructions for the finish; avoid choosing aggressive cleaners or abrasive tools without checking that they are suitable.

For another preformed cascade profile, compare the Rockways Atlantis Single Step Garden Waterfall. If you need help planning the pump and return arrangement, contact That Pond Guy with the proposed height, hose route and photographs of the installation area. Those details are more useful for selecting a workable system than pump wattage alone.

Compare the Becka Falls Drop

For a different watercourse profile in the same pebble-effect range, see the Oase Rockways Becka Falls Drop Cascade. Compare the shape with your planned water route and trial-position the sections before completing the supporting landscape.
