Ornamental Marginal Pond Pack

A decorative mixed pond plant pack selected for colour, foliage, height and seasonal interest around garden pond edges.

Add colour, structure and ornamental planting to your pond margins

The Ornamental Marginal Pond Pack is a carefully selected mix of decorative marginal pond plants, chosen to bring colour, height, texture and visual impact to the edges of your pond. Marginal pond plants are positioned on pond shelves or shallow planting areas, where their roots sit in water while their foliage and flowers grow above the surface. This makes them one of the most important plant groups for creating a natural, attractive and well balanced garden pond.

This pack is ideal for pond owners who want a showier planting scheme without needing to choose each variety individually. Our growers select suitable ornamental marginals based on seasonal availability, plant quality and what is looking strongest at the time of dispatch. The exact varieties may change throughout the year, but the pack will always be selected with decorative value in mind.

Ornamental marginal plants can completely transform the appearance of a pond. They soften hard edges, disguise pond baskets, add height around the waterline and create a more established look. Depending on the varieties included, your pack may contain plants chosen for flowers, colourful foliage, upright leaves, architectural growth or seasonal interest. This makes the pack especially useful for ornamental ponds, formal ponds, mixed planting schemes, water features and garden ponds where visual appeal is a priority.

Marginal plants also provide practical benefits. Their stems and leaves create cover around the water’s edge, while their flowers can attract bees, hoverflies, butterflies and other pollinating insects. The planted margins of a pond are also useful for small pond creatures, helping provide shade, shelter and safe access between the water and surrounding garden.

This pack is suited to UK ponds and contains hardy pond plants suitable for the British climate. It is a great choice for new ponds that need instant structure, established ponds that need more colour, or plain pond edges that would benefit from decorative planting.

Depending on the pack size selected, you will receive either 3 x 1 litre plants, 6 x 9 cm plants, or 4 x 3 litre plants. The 1 litre and 3 litre plants arrive pre planted in Finofil aquatic baskets, while 9 cm plants will need repotting into suitable aquatic baskets before being placed in the pond.

Reasons to buy the Ornamental Marginal Pond Pack

The Ornamental Marginal Pond Pack is perfect if you want an attractive pond planting scheme but are unsure which individual varieties to choose. Instead of selecting each plant separately, you receive a seasonal mix chosen for decorative impact and strong plant quality.

This pack is especially useful for adding interest to bare pond edges. Marginal plants create a natural transition between the pond and the garden, helping soften liner edges, stonework, gravel margins and planting shelves.

It is also a good choice if you want more flower and foliage interest around your pond. Depending on the season and the varieties selected, the pack may include plants with colourful flowers, bold leaves, upright growth or contrasting textures.

For larger ponds, several packs can be used to build up a fuller planted display. For smaller ponds, one pack can create a strong starting point and can be combined with waterlilies, oxygenators and floating plants for a more complete pond planting scheme.

Pack options and what you will receive

Depending on the pack size selected, your Ornamental Marginal Pond Pack will contain one of the following:

• 3 x 1 litre ornamental marginal pond plants

• 6 x 9 cm ornamental marginal pond plants

• 4 x 3 litre ornamental marginal pond plants

This pack contains marginal pond plants only. It does not include waterlilies, floating plants, deep water plants or bunched oxygenators unless purchased separately.

1 litre and 3 litre plants arrive pre planted in Finofil aquatic baskets using aquatic soil and slow release aquatic plant fertiliser. These can normally be placed directly onto a suitable pond shelf.

9 cm plants arrive in solid nursery pots and must be repotted into aquatic baskets before being placed in the pond. We recommend using 1 litre aquatic baskets or larger, filled with suitable aquatic compost.

Varieties will vary depending on seasonal availability, growing conditions and plant quality. If you order more than 1 of the same pack at the same time, the contents may be identical because packs are prepared from the same available batch at the time of dispatch.

For a wider variety of plants, consider choosing different pack types or placing a second order later in the season.

Care instructions

Place marginal pond plants on a pond shelf or shallow planting area at the depth recommended on each plant’s individual care label. Planting depth varies depending on variety, so always check the label supplied with your plants.

As a guide, planting depth is measured from the top of the basket to the water surface.

Most marginal plants prefer their basket to sit just below the water surface, with the crown and foliage growing above the water. Avoid placing them too deep unless the plant label confirms that the variety is suitable for deeper positioning.

Choose a bright position in full sun or partial shade. Many ornamental marginals flower best in good light, although some varieties will tolerate part shade.

Remove dead leaves, faded flowers and tired stems during the growing season to keep the pond looking tidy. In autumn, cut back dead foliage once it has collapsed, but leave any useful stems standing if they provide winter structure or wildlife shelter.

If you remove larger amounts of plant material, leave it beside the pond for around 24 hours before composting it. This gives small pond creatures time to return to the water.

Koi, carp, ducks and other wildfowl may disturb or eat marginal plants. If your pond contains larger fish or is regularly visited by ducks, plant protection may be required.

Flowering period

Flowering will vary depending on the ornamental marginal plants included in your pack.

Many marginal pond plants flower from late spring through summer, with some continuing into early autumn. Others are selected more for foliage, height, colour or structure than for flowers.

Because this is a mixed seasonal pack, it should be purchased for overall ornamental value rather than for a guaranteed flowering period or specific flower colour.

Each plant will arrive with its own care label, which will provide individual guidance on flowering time, planting depth and growing conditions.

For general marginal planting, allow enough space between plants so they have room to grow without crowding each other. Larger 3 litre plants will give a fuller appearance more quickly, while smaller 9 cm plants are a cost effective option for planting in larger numbers.

Marginal pond plants and other pond plants

Marginal plants are used around pond edges and shallow shelves. They add height, flowers, foliage and structure around the waterline, making them essential for a natural looking pond.

Waterlilies and deep water plants are usually placed lower in the pond, where their leaves can float on the surface. Floating plants sit directly on the water surface, while oxygenators grow beneath the water to add submerged planting and habitat.

The Ornamental Marginal Pond Pack works well alongside waterlilies, floating plants and oxygenators. For a complete planting scheme, combine marginals around the pond edge with oxygenating plants below the surface and a suitable waterlily or deep water plant for leaf cover.

Your plants on arrival

Your plants will be selected from suitable ornamental marginal pond plants according to the pack size ordered and the best available stock at the time of dispatch.

1 litre and 3 litre plants arrive pre planted in Finofil aquatic baskets with aquatic soil and slow release aquatic plant fertiliser. These can normally be placed straight onto a suitable pond shelf.

9 cm plants arrive in solid pots and will need repotting into aquatic baskets before being placed in the pond. We recommend using 1 litre baskets or larger with aquatic compost.

Finofil aquatic baskets are made from 100% recycled plastic and are designed with a fine mesh that helps retain aquatic soil while allowing water to move around the roots. A separate hessian liner is optional and is not normally required for Finofil baskets.

Each plant will arrive with an individual care label showing its planting depth and growing guidance.

Dispatching your pond plants

Pond plants are carefully selected, watered and packed to help protect them during delivery. As living plants, their size, colour, amount of foliage and flowering stage will naturally vary throughout the season.

The Ornamental Marginal Pond Pack is normally available from April, although exact availability depends on seasonal growing conditions and nursery stock.

Plants dispatched early in the season may arrive with less visible top growth or may not yet be in flower. This is normal and does not mean the plants are unhealthy. Many pond plants establish better when dispatched before they are in full growth.

If your order contains ready to send plants and preorder plants, the full order will usually be held until everything is ready. If you need available items sooner, it is best to place separate orders.

Upon arrival, unpack your plants promptly and check that the soil is moist. Place pre potted plants onto a suitable pond shelf as soon as possible. Repot 9 cm plants into aquatic baskets before placing them in the pond.

Do not allow aquatic plants or aquatic soil to dry out. If you cannot plant them immediately, keep them in a tray or bucket of pond water in a bright, sheltered position.
