Native Wildlife Marginal Pond Pack

A mixed pack of UK native marginal pond plants selected to support pollinators, amphibians, insects and natural pond biodiversity.

Create a natural pond edge with native plants for wildlife and pollinators

The Native Wildlife Marginal Pond Pack is a carefully selected mix of UK native marginal pond plants, chosen to help create a more natural, biodiverse and wildlife friendly pond edge. Marginal plants grow around the shallow shelves and edges of a pond, where their roots sit in water while their foliage and flowers rise above the surface. This makes them one of the most valuable plant groups for wildlife ponds, natural garden ponds and ponds designed to support insects, amphibians and pollinators.

This pack is ideal if you want to add native pond planting without needing to choose each variety individually. Our growers select suitable wildlife friendly marginals based on seasonal availability, plant strength and what is looking best at the time of dispatch. The exact varieties may change throughout the year, but the pack will always be selected from suitable UK native marginal pond plants with wildlife value in mind.

Native marginal plants help soften pond edges, disguise baskets and create a natural transition between open water and surrounding garden planting. They also provide important cover at the waterline, which is one of the busiest and most valuable areas of a pond. Tadpoles, froglets, newts and aquatic insects often use shallow planted areas for shelter, movement and emergence. Dragonfly and damselfly larvae may also use upright stems when climbing from the water before transforming into adults.

Flowering native marginal plants can also support pollinators. Depending on the varieties included, your pack may provide seasonal flowers for bees, hoverflies, butterflies and other beneficial insects. Even plants that are not especially showy can still contribute to habitat by offering structure, shade and cover around the pond margin.

This pack is suitable for new wildlife ponds, naturalistic garden ponds and established ponds that need more native planting around the edge. It is especially useful where a pond looks bare, exposed or too formal, as native marginal plants quickly help create a softer and more established appearance.

Depending on the pack size selected, you will receive either 3 x 1 litre plants, 6 x 1 litre plants, 6 x 9 cm plants, or 4 x 3 litre UK native wildlife friendly marginal plants. The 1 litre and 3 litre plants arrive pre planted in Finofil aquatic baskets, while 9 cm plants will need repotting into suitable aquatic baskets before placing in the pond.

Reasons to buy the Native Wildlife Marginal Pond Pack

The Native Wildlife Marginal Pond Pack is perfect if you want to build a more natural pond planting scheme using UK native plants. Instead of choosing individual varieties yourself, you receive a suitable mix selected for wildlife value and strong seasonal quality.

This pack is especially useful for creating habitat around the shallow edges of a pond. These marginal areas are vital for amphibians, insects and other small pond creatures, providing shelter, shade and access between land and water.

It is also a good choice if you want your pond to look more established and natural. Native marginal plants help soften hard edges, hide liners and baskets, and create a more relaxed wildlife pond appearance.

For larger ponds, several packs can be used to build up a fuller native margin. For smaller ponds, one pack can create an excellent starting point and can be combined with oxygenators, waterlilies and floating plants for a more complete pond ecosystem.

Pack options and what you will receive

Depending on the pack size selected, your Native Wildlife Marginal Pond Pack will contain one of the following:

• 3 x 1 litre UK native marginal pond plants

• 6 x 1 litre UK native marginal pond plants

• 6 x 9 cm UK native marginal pond plants

• 4 x 3 litre UK native marginal pond plants

This pack contains marginal pond plants only. It does not include waterlilies, floating plants, deep water plants or bunched oxygenators unless purchased separately.

1 litre and 3 litre plants arrive pre planted in Finofil aquatic baskets using aquatic soil and slow release aquatic plant fertiliser. These can normally be placed directly onto a suitable pond shelf.

9 cm plants arrive in solid nursery pots and must be repotted into aquatic baskets before being placed in the pond. We recommend using 1 litre aquatic baskets or larger, filled with suitable aquatic compost.

Varieties will vary depending on seasonal availability, growing conditions and plant quality. If you order more than 1 of the same pack at the same time, the contents may be identical because packs are prepared from the same available batch at the time of dispatch.

For a wider variety of plants, consider choosing different pack types or placing a second order later in the season.

Care instructions

Place marginal pond plants on a pond shelf or shallow planting area at the depth recommended on each individual plant label. Planting depth varies depending on the variety included, so always check the label supplied with each plant.

As a guide, planting depth is measured from the top of the basket to the water surface.

Most marginal plants prefer their basket to sit just below the water surface, with the crown and foliage growing above the water. Avoid placing marginal plants too deep unless the care label confirms that the variety is suitable for deeper water.

Choose a position in full sun or partial shade, depending on the plants included. Many native marginals flower best in good light, although some varieties will tolerate partial shade.

Remove dead leaves, faded flowers and tired stems when needed. In autumn, cut back collapsed foliage to prevent too much organic material entering the pond. You may wish to leave some upright stems over winter where they provide useful structure for insects and wildlife.

If you remove larger amounts of plant material, leave it beside the pond for around 24 hours before composting it. This gives small pond creatures time to return safely to the water.

Koi, carp, ducks and other wildfowl may disturb or eat marginal plants. If your pond contains larger fish or is regularly visited by ducks, plant protection may be required.

Flowering period

Flowering will vary depending on the native marginal plants included in your pack.

Many UK native marginal pond plants flower from late spring through summer, with some continuing into early autumn. Others are selected more for foliage, structure, cover or habitat value than for flowers.

Because this is a mixed seasonal pack, it should be purchased for overall wildlife value rather than for a guaranteed flowering period or specific flower colour.

Each plant will arrive with its own care label, which will provide individual guidance on flowering time, planting depth and growing conditions.

For general marginal planting, allow enough space between plants so they have room to establish. Larger 3 litre plants provide a fuller look more quickly, while smaller 9 cm plants are a cost effective option for planting in larger numbers.

Marginal pond plants and other pond plants

Marginal plants grow around the shallow shelves and edges of a pond. They add height, flowers, foliage and structure around the waterline, while also creating shelter and access points for wildlife.

Waterlilies and deep water plants are usually placed lower in the pond, where their leaves can float on the surface. Floating plants sit directly on the water surface, while oxygenators grow beneath the water and provide submerged planting and habitat.

The Native Wildlife Marginal Pond Pack works well alongside oxygenators, waterlilies and floating plants. For a balanced wildlife pond, combine native marginals around the edge with oxygenating plants below the surface and floating or deep water plants for shade and cover.

Your plants on arrival

Your plants will be selected from suitable UK native marginal pond plants according to the pack size ordered and the best available stock at the time of dispatch.

1 litre and 3 litre plants arrive pre planted in Finofil aquatic baskets with aquatic soil and slow release aquatic plant fertiliser. These can normally be placed straight onto a suitable pond shelf.

9 cm plants arrive in solid pots and will need repotting into aquatic baskets before being placed in the pond. We recommend using 1 litre baskets or larger with aquatic compost.

Finofil aquatic baskets are made from 100% recycled plastic and are designed with a fine mesh that helps retain aquatic soil while allowing water to move around the roots. A separate hessian liner is optional and is not normally required for Finofil baskets.

Each plant will arrive with an individual care label showing its planting depth and growing guidance.

Dispatching your pond plants

Pond plants are carefully selected, watered and packed to help protect them during delivery. As living plants, their size, colour, amount of foliage and flowering stage will naturally vary throughout the season.

The Native Wildlife Marginal Pond Pack is normally available from April, although exact availability depends on seasonal growing conditions and nursery stock.

Plants dispatched early in the season may arrive with less visible top growth or may not yet be in flower. This is normal and does not mean the plants are unhealthy. Many pond plants establish better when dispatched before they are in full growth.

If your order contains ready to send plants and preorder plants, the full order will usually be held until everything is ready. If you need available items sooner, it is best to place separate orders.

Upon arrival, unpack your plants promptly and check that the soil is moist. Place pre potted plants onto a suitable pond shelf as soon as possible. Repot 9 cm plants into aquatic baskets before placing them in the pond.

Do not allow aquatic plants or aquatic soil to dry out. If you cannot plant them immediately, keep them in a tray or bucket of pond water in a bright, sheltered position.
