Queen’s Prize Monkey Flower (Mimulus luteus ‘Queen’s Prize’)

Bright yellow pond plant with striking blotched flowers and long summer colour

Queen’s Prize Monkey Flower (Mimulus luteus ‘Queen’s Prize’) is a vibrant and eye catching marginal pond plant, perfect for adding bold colour and detail to pond edges, bog gardens, and damp planting areas. Known for its bright yellow flowers marked with distinctive reddish blotches, this variety brings both colour and character to any water garden setting.

Flowering from June through to August, and often continuing beyond in favourable conditions, ‘Queen’s Prize’ produces an abundance of cheerful blooms that create a lively and attractive display. The unique patterning on each flower gives it added visual interest, making it stand out among more traditional pond plants.

This compact yet fast growing perennial is ideal for pond margins and shallow water areas. It thrives in consistently moist to wet soil and can be planted in very shallow water, making it perfect for marginal shelves or damp ground around the pond. Its manageable size means it works equally well in smaller garden ponds, container water features, or as part of a layered planting scheme in larger ponds.

The fresh green foliage forms a neat, bushy clump that supports the mass of flowers above, helping to create a full and lush appearance. This dense growth also provides light cover for insects and small amphibians around the pond edge.

In addition to its ornamental value, Mimulus ‘Queen’s Prize’ is also beneficial for wildlife. Its nectar rich flowers attract pollinators such as bees and hoverflies, helping to support a healthy pond ecosystem throughout the summer months.

Fully hardy in most UK conditions, this plant is reliable and easy to grow. It performs best in full sun, where flowering is at its strongest, although it will tolerate partial shade. With minimal care, it will return year after year, providing consistent colour and interest.

If you are looking for a bright, reliable, and slightly unusual pond plant that offers both beauty and wildlife value, Queen’s Prize Monkey Flower (Mimulus luteus ‘Queen’s Prize’) is an excellent addition to any pondside planting scheme.
