Golden Creeping Jenny | Lysimachia nummularia ‘Aurea’
Bright golden trailing pond plant perfect for margins, containers, and softening edges
Golden Creeping Jenny is one of the best plants you can add if you want instant colour and impact around your pond. Unlike the standard green variety, Lysimachia nummularia ‘Aurea’ stands out with its vibrant golden yellow foliage, which creates a bright, eye catching contrast against darker water, stone, and surrounding plants.
This low growing, creeping perennial forms a dense carpet of rounded leaves that trail naturally across pond edges, spill over rocks, and cascade beautifully from container ponds. From June to August, it produces small but cheerful yellow flowers that blend seamlessly with the foliage, adding even more colour during the summer months.
Golden Creeping Jenny is incredibly versatile. It can be used as a marginal plant in shallow water, planted into damp soil around pond edges, or used in containers and water features where it softens hard edges and adds a natural finish. It is especially effective when allowed to trail over the side of a pond or raised feature, creating a relaxed, natural look.
Beyond its visual appeal, this plant is also highly beneficial for wildlife. Its dense, mat forming growth provides shelter for amphibians such as frogs and toads, while also offering protection for insects and small pond life. The foliage helps shade the water slightly, which can assist in maintaining more stable conditions within the pond.
Golden Creeping Jenny thrives in moist to wet soil and shallow water, typically up to 20 cm deep. It grows well in full sun where its colour becomes most intense, although it will also perform well in partial shade. Growth is moderate but steady, and it can spread to cover larger areas if left unchecked, making it ideal for groundcover but easy to manage with occasional trimming.
This plant is fully hardy in the UK and extremely low maintenance, making it suitable for beginners and experienced pond keepers alike. It is a fantastic choice for softening pond edges, filling gaps between planting, or adding a splash of colour to otherwise green planting schemes.
