Iris louisiana ‘Her Highness’
Elegant pale pink Louisiana Iris for ponds, bog gardens, and damp borders
Iris louisiana ‘Her Highness’ is a beautifully refined marginal plant, prized for its soft, pale pink blooms that bring a sense of elegance and calm to any pond or damp garden setting. This Louisiana Iris is perfect for those looking to soften a planting scheme while still adding height, structure, and seasonal colour.
Flowering from June to July, ‘Her Highness’ produces large, graceful blooms in delicate shades of pale pink, often appearing almost white in certain light with subtle yellow detailing at the centre. These flowers rise above the foliage on sturdy stems, creating a gentle yet eye catching display that contrasts beautifully with darker greens and bolder planting.
The upright, sword like foliage forms neat clumps, providing strong vertical structure throughout the growing season. Even when not in flower, this plant adds shape and presence to pond margins and boggy areas. The dense growth also offers valuable shelter for amphibians such as frogs and insects, supporting a healthy pond ecosystem.
This variety thrives in moist to wet soils and can be planted on pond edges or in shallow water up to around 15 cm deep. It prefers full sun for the best flowering display, although it will tolerate partial shade. While suitable for many UK gardens, it benefits from winter protection in colder areas, especially where temperatures regularly drop below freezing.
Iris louisiana ‘Her Highness’ is ideal for both naturalistic and more formal planting schemes. It works beautifully when planted in groups to create a soft, flowing display or used as a contrast to darker flowering plants. Its gentle colouring makes it especially versatile, pairing well with a wide range of pond plants.
Once established, this Louisiana Iris is low maintenance and reliable, returning each year with consistent performance and graceful blooms.
Please note that all parts of the plant are harmful if ingested.
