Gold Label Pipe Repair Tape – 5-metre roll

Gold Label Pipe Repair Tape is a stretchy, self-sealing tape for repairs around pipework. It wraps around the pipe and bonds to its own layers. This listing is for the 5-metre roll. It is useful to keep with your pond maintenance equipment when you need to attend to a leaking pipe, rather than buying an adhesive liner patch for a pipework problem.

Hutton Aquatic Products describes the tape for pipe repairs in ponds, aquariums, tanks and marine applications. Its application method starts with turning off the pressure, cleaning and drying the repair area, then winding the tape tightly. Those preparation steps matter: this is a wrap-around repair, and the condition of the pipe and the way the layers meet both affect the result.

What you are buying

Brand Gold Label
Product Self-sealing pipe repair tape
Roll length 5 metres
Application Wrapped tightly around prepared pipework
Surface preparation Clean and completely dry before wrapping

Check the roll length when comparing products. Other Gold Label tape listings may be for a 3-metre roll, so they do not contain the same amount as this 5-metre option. A roll length also cannot be converted directly into a number of repairs: the pipe circumference and the amount of overlapping tape used change the quantity required.

Find the source of the leak first

Follow the pipe run and establish where water is escaping before beginning. A leak at a connection may come from a loose clamp, a damaged hose end or an incorrectly seated seal. A crack in a fitting needs a different assessment from a drip at a connection. Identifying the problem helps you decide whether a tape repair is appropriate or whether the damaged component should be replaced.

For a hose connection, inspect the hose and the securing clip. Our stainless steel hose clips are available in different clamping ranges. Measure the outside of the hose where the clip will sit, rather than ordering a clip from the hose’s internal diameter alone. A tape wrap should not be used to hide an incorrectly fitted or damaged connection that still needs attention.

How to apply the tape

First isolate the affected pipework and remove the water pressure. Arrange the job so that you can work around the repair area without pulling on adjacent fittings. If a pump is part of that route, plan the isolation and restart before you begin, and avoid leaving equipment operating against a closed or disconnected line.

Hutton’s method specifies Gold Label Solvent Cleaner for preparing the area. Clean the pipe, then dry it thoroughly with a towel. Inspect the result and make sure the surface is completely dry before wrapping. Follow the cleaner’s own instructions as well; do not substitute a different solvent solely because it is already in your toolbox.

Pull out a usable length of tape and wind it around the pipe under tension. The tape seals to itself, so maintain a tight wrap as the layers meet. Hutton advises extra turns where the pipe will be under water pressure. The manufacturer does not give a fixed number of turns on its current product page, so this description does not prescribe an invented winding count or a pressure rating.

After the wrap is applied, check the pipe carefully for watertightness. If water still escapes, repeat the wrapping stage as directed by Hutton and assess the underlying fault again. Do not assume that the leak is repaired simply because the visible area is covered. Leave access to the repair so that it can be inspected during subsequent maintenance.

Tape, sealer or a liner patch?

These products solve different types of problem. Pipe repair tape is wrapped around pipework. A liner patch is applied to a suitable liner repair area. A sealer has its own substrate, preparation and curing requirements. Choosing by the location and material of the fault is more useful than choosing whichever repair product happens to be available.

If the damage is in a pond liner, compare our Gold Label pond liner repair patches and read their individual fitting guidance. For sealing work, see Gold Label underwater pond sealer. Neither is automatically interchangeable with this tape, and neither linked product is included with the roll.

When replacing pipework is the better repair

Look beyond the immediate wet spot. If a hose or pipe is deteriorating along a larger section, replacing that section may be more practical than attending to successive leaks. If a rigid fitting is cracked or a thread is damaged, replace it with the correctly specified component rather than treating a wrap as proof that the original fitting remains sound.

Our imperial solvent-weld flexible heavy-duty hose is one pipework option to compare where that connection system is suitable. Check the actual pipe system, size and joint type before buying replacements. Metric, imperial, threaded and solvent-weld connections need their own matching parts; a similar-looking fitting is not sufficient evidence of a match.

Keep a practical repair record

Record the location and date of the repair, and keep the tape packaging with your pond equipment information. Check the area when carrying out normal filter and pump maintenance. An accessible pipe route makes those checks easier and lets you replace a damaged component without dismantling the surrounding installation.
