Hard Rush, also known as Blue Rush, is a strong and reliable UK native marginal plant that brings structure, texture, and subtle colour to pond margins and wetland planting schemes. Juncus inflexus is well known for its distinctive upright stems, which have a soft blue green tone that contrasts beautifully against surrounding foliage and water surfaces.

This clump forming rush is ideal for creating natural looking pond edges, particularly in wildlife ponds, larger garden ponds, and landscaping projects. Its stiff, upright stems grow in neat vertical clusters, adding height and movement while maintaining a tidy appearance throughout the growing season. During the summer months, typically from June to August, it produces small brown flower clusters. While these flowers are not showy, they add a natural texture that complements more colourful planting.

Hard Rush is particularly valuable for wildlife. Its dense clumps provide shelter for amphibians such as frogs and toads, as well as cover for insects and small pond creatures. The strong root system also plays an important role in stabilising pond edges and reducing erosion, making it a practical as well as attractive choice for pondside planting.

This plant thrives in consistently moist to wet soils and can be planted in shallow water up to around 15 cm deep. It performs best in full sun but will also tolerate partial shade, making it versatile for a wide range of pond settings. Its moderate growth rate allows it to establish steadily without becoming overly invasive, especially when planted in aquatic baskets.

Fully hardy in UK conditions, Hard Rush requires very little maintenance once established. It is a dependable, long lasting plant that works well in both formal and naturalistic pond designs. Care Instructions

• Plant on a marginal shelf at a depth of 0 cm to 15 cm or in consistently moist soil.
• Position in full sun for best growth, although partial shade is tolerated.
• Trim back damaged or untidy stems in early spring to encourage fresh growth. Divide clumps every few years to maintain vigour and prevent overcrowding.
• For smaller ponds, keep contained in an aquatic basket to control spread.

Dispatching Your Pond Plants

Your Hard Rush will be carefully packed to protect the foliage and roots during transit.

Orders received by 11am Monday to Wednesday are normally dispatched on the following working day using a next working day courier service. During busy periods, dispatch may occasionally take an extra day.

To avoid plants being held in depots over a weekend, we do not usually dispatch on Fridays. Highlands and Islands orders using a two day service are not normally dispatched on Thursdays.

• Pack of 3 × 9cm Pots
• 1 Litre Basket – usually 11 × 11 × 11cm square; some varieties may be supplied in a 14cm diameter × 10cm round basket
• Pack of 3 × 1 Litre Baskets – each usually 11 × 11 × 11cm square
• 3 Litre Hexagonal Basket – 18 × 18 × 16cm

Planting depth is measured from the top of the aquatic basket to the water surface.

Plants supplied in 9cm pots require potting into suitable aquatic baskets before being placed in the pond.

Finofil baskets are manufactured in the UK from 100% recycled plastic and are fully recyclable. Their fine dual-mesh construction helps retain aquatic soil while allowing water and nutrients to reach the roots. Basket shape may vary slightly depending on the plant and supplier availability.
