James Brydon Waterlily (Nymphaea ‘James Brydon’)
A striking red waterlily with rich cup shaped blooms and maroon flecked foliage, perfect for adding bold colour and late season interest to your pond.
James Brydon Waterlily (Nymphaea ‘James Brydon’) is a vibrant and reliable variety, well known for its deep red flowers and excellent performance throughout the growing season. This eye catching waterlily is perfect for adding strong colour, structure and ecological benefits to medium sized ponds.
From early summer through to autumn, James Brydon produces rich red, cup shaped flowers that sit proudly on the water’s surface. The blooms are bold and saturated in colour, often described as a deep magenta red, making them stand out beautifully against the surrounding greenery. One of the key advantages of this variety is its extended flowering period, often continuing later into the season than many other waterlilies, helping to keep your pond looking colourful well into autumn.
The foliage adds further visual appeal. The rounded floating leaves are deep green with subtle maroon flecking, giving the plant added interest even when not in bloom. As the leaves spread across the pond surface, they provide essential shade. This helps reduce sunlight penetration, which limits algae growth and supports clearer, healthier water.
With a spread of around 70 cm to 90 cm, James Brydon is well suited to medium sized ponds. It offers a good balance between coverage and control, making it easy to combine with other pond plants without overcrowding the surface.
This waterlily thrives in still water and performs best in full sun, where flowering is most prolific and colours are at their strongest. Once established, it is easy to care for and returns reliably year after year.
Beyond its ornamental value, James Brydon also supports pond wildlife. The floating leaves provide shelter for fish and amphibians, while the flowers attract pollinators such as bees and insects. This makes it a great choice for anyone looking to create a wildlife friendly pond.
If you are looking for a bold red waterlily with a long flowering season and excellent all round performance, James Brydon is a fantastic and dependable choice.
