Pygmaea Helvola Waterlily (Nymphaea ‘Pygmaea Helvola’)

A compact dwarf waterlily with soft yellow flowers and beautifully mottled leaves, perfect for small ponds, container water features and patio displays.

Pygmaea Helvola Waterlily (Nymphaea ‘Pygmaea Helvola’) is one of the most popular miniature waterlilies available, perfectly suited to small ponds, patio containers and compact water features. Its neat size, attractive foliage and reliable flowering make it an excellent choice for adding colour and life to smaller aquatic spaces.

This charming variety produces small, rounded floating leaves with distinctive bronze and purple mottling. Even when not in flower, the foliage provides visual interest and gentle surface coverage, helping to reduce sunlight penetration and limit algae growth. The leaves sit neatly on the water surface, creating a balanced and natural look without overwhelming the pond.

From early summer through to autumn, Pygmaea Helvola produces delicate, star shaped pale yellow flowers. These blooms typically measure around 3 cm to 5 cm across and sit just above the water, opening in the sunlight to create a soft, elegant display. Despite its compact size, this waterlily is known for being free flowering, often producing multiple blooms throughout the season.

Thanks to its smaller spread, this variety is ideal for container ponds, wildlife bowls, raised water features and smaller garden ponds where larger waterlilies would be unsuitable. It is also commonly used in aquascaping and formal water features where scale and proportion are important.

Pygmaea Helvola thrives in still water and prefers a sunny position, which encourages consistent flowering and healthy growth. Its compact root system makes it easy to manage, and it requires very little maintenance once established.

Fully hardy in UK conditions, this miniature waterlily will return year after year when planted correctly. It is also beneficial for wildlife, offering light shade, shelter and resting areas for insects and amphibians.

For anyone looking to introduce a waterlily into a smaller pond without compromising on beauty or performance, Pygmaea Helvola is an excellent and reliable choice.
