A dedicated nitrate reading for your pond records

The Colombo NO3 test measures nitrate over a manufacturer-stated range of 0–100mg/l. It is intended for freshwater pond testing and provides a visual colour comparison after the reagents have developed. The individual kit is useful when nitrate is a regular part of your testing routine or when you need to replenish this test in a Colombo case.

Nitrate and nitrite have similar names but are different measurements. This kit does not provide a nitrite result; choose the Colombo NO2 nitrite test for that parameter. Check the NO3 marking on the packaging and bottles when buying a replacement, particularly if several different Colombo tests are stored together.

Two liquids and a powder, with a timed result

The nitrate procedure combines two labelled test liquids with nitrate powder. All three have a role in the method, so using only the dropper bottles does not complete the test. Colombo identifies the nitrate powder container by its green cap in the current instructions. Check the label as well as the cap, and keep the measuring spoon with the appropriate reagent.

This is not the same process as the KH drop-count test or the phosphate test. Nitrate requires its own quantities, mixing period and development time. Read through the sequence before starting, and have a timer ready so that the sample is compared at the intended point rather than whenever it happens to be convenient.

Manufacturer testing sequence

1. Measure a 10ml water sample into a clean test tube.
2. Add five drops of NO3-1 liquid and shake to mix.
3. Add five drops of NO3-2 liquid and shake again.
4. Add one spoon of nitrate powder from the green-cap container.
5. Shake the sample for 20 seconds.
6. Wait 15 minutes, then compare with the supplied nitrate colour chart.

Follow the complete leaflet supplied with your kit, including any revised directions. The 20-second mixing period and 15-minute development period are separate stages. Set the development timer after the prescribed mixing; a quick shake followed by an immediate colour comparison is not the manufacturer’s procedure.

Getting the sample and drops right

Colombo advises measuring the water volume as precisely as possible, keeping the dropper bottle vertical and avoiding air bubbles in the drops. Start with a tube that is clean, and clean it directly after use. Residue from a previous test can affect a later sample, even when the tube looks almost empty.

Use the supplied measuring tool for the powder. A household teaspoon is not a substitute for the test spoon. If a test is interrupted and you are unsure whether a reagent has already been added, prepare a new sample rather than adding an uncertain extra dose. Keeping the bottles in the order you use them can help you follow the sequence without losing your place.

Understanding the colour scale

The manufacturer’s illustrated nitrate chart shows comparison points of 0, 10, 20, 50 and 100mg/l. These are reference colours, rather than a digital display giving a result at every single milligram per litre. Record the closest supported reading and note when a sample sits between two colours instead of claiming more precision than you can see.

The scale’s upper point is also a measurement limit. A sample at the darkest end should not be recorded as a precise value above 100mg/l on the basis of colour alone. If the result is outside what you can interpret confidently, check the procedure and seek advice on an appropriate further test. Do not invent a dilution method without manufacturer instructions.

Comparing results over time

For a useful record, note the date, nitrate result and the water sample’s origin. If you are comparing pond water with incoming replacement water, label the tubes and results clearly. Keep the same method and units when comparing readings before and after a water change; mixing different testing procedures makes those comparisons harder to interpret.

A nitrate reading describes one water parameter. It cannot establish ammonia, nitrite, pH or hardness, and it should not be treated as an all-clear for the entire pond. Contents, replacement and storage

Colombo states that the individual nitrate kit provides material for 40 tests when used according to its directions. Keep the liquids, powder, tube, chart and instructions together so that an otherwise usable kit is not left incomplete. Close the reagent containers after use and observe the storage and expiry details on the supplied packaging.
