Brooklime

Native blue flowering pond plant for margins, wildlife ponds, and natural planting

Brooklime, also known as Veronica beccabunga, is a vibrant and highly beneficial native aquatic plant that brings colour, texture, and strong ecological value to pond edges and bog gardens. With its vivid blue flowers and lush green foliage, it is an excellent choice for creating a natural, wildlife friendly pond environment.

Flowering from late spring through to early autumn, typically between May and September, Brooklime produces clusters of bright blue, two lipped flowers that stand out beautifully against its glossy green leaves. These blooms are highly attractive to bees and pollinators, helping to support biodiversity around your pond.

The foliage forms a dense, creeping mat of broad, oval leaves that spreads across damp soil and shallow water areas. This growth habit makes Brooklime particularly useful for stabilising pond edges, preventing erosion, and softening transitions between water and land. It is especially valuable in wildlife ponds, where it provides shelter for amphibians, insects, and other aquatic life.

One of its standout ecological benefits is its importance to newts, as the soft leaves are often used for wrapping their eggs. This makes Brooklime a fantastic addition if you are aiming to encourage amphibians and create a thriving pond ecosystem.

Brooklime thrives in moist to waterlogged soils and is well suited to shallow pond margins or boggy areas. It performs well in both full sun and partial shade, making it a flexible choice for a wide range of pond settings. As a fast growing plant, it will quickly establish and spread, so occasional management may be needed to keep it under control.

This hardy UK native is easy to grow, low maintenance, and ideal for both ornamental and wildlife focused pond designs.
