The Blagdon Raised Nature Pond M Octagon brings a small water habitat into a garden or patio without excavating a pond. Its brown wicker effect panels surround a lined 270 litre pond, with an underwater viewing window that lets you see beneath the surface. A floating solar fountain provides water movement, while the beach, planting pocket and wildlife ladder give the pond a different purpose from a conventional ornamental fish pool.

This is the Nature version of the Blagdon raised pond range. Its supplied fountain runs from sunlight, and the set includes features intended to help visiting wildlife reach the water. What comes with the pond?

The set includes the resin panels, liner, protective underlay and assembly components, together with a beach and planting pocket, wildlife ladder and Solar Floating Fountain. The manufacturer’s illustrated guide shows the panel clips, liner hooks and tension wires used to build the pond, so you can check the contents and follow the assembly sequence before filling it.

Plants, fish, gravel and decorative material shown in the manufacturer’s photograph are not part of the equipment list. Materials for filling the bug shelter recess are also not included. Choose a position that suits the solar fountain

The fountain needs direct sunlight to perform well. Blagdon recommends a position where its solar panel receives unobstructed sun, so check how fences, trees and buildings shade the proposed site through the day. The quoted maximum flow is a full sunlight figure; do not plan around the fountain producing the same display in shade or after dark.

Choose the position before assembly and filling. The installation guide requires a firm, level base. At its nominal capacity, the water alone weighs approximately 270kg, before the pond, planting and other contents are considered. An uneven surface can leave the waterline looking crooked and the structure poorly supported. A balcony or raised deck needs an appropriate assessment of its load capacity before any filled pond is installed.

A beach and ladder for visiting wildlife

The sloping beach provides a shallow area where birds can drink or bathe. The access ladder connects the raised pond with ground level, while the planting pocket creates a place for marginal vegetation. Keep the route to the ladder clear when arranging pots and garden furniture, and leave access to the beach rather than filling every available space with plants.

The recess beneath the ladder can be used for suitable bug shelter material. Think of these features as opportunities to support wildlife, rather than a promise that particular animals will arrive. A calm, accessible position and thoughtful planting are part of making the pond useful to the wildlife already visiting your garden.

Planting a small nature pond

Choose plants for their mature size and required planting depth. A compact pond can become crowded surprisingly quickly if vigorous varieties are selected only for how they look on delivery. Leave some open water around the floating fountain and keep foliage away from its solar panel. Use the planting pocket for suitable marginal plants and check each plant’s water depth guidance before positioning it.

Assembly and ongoing care

Blagdon describes a typical build time of under an hour, but allow additional time to prepare the base and arrange planting carefully.
