The Blagdon Raised Fish Pond L Octagon creates a freestanding fish pond without excavating the garden. Its octagonal shape can be enjoyed from several sides, with three underwater viewing windows that let you watch fish and plants below the waterline. The anthracite wicker effect panels form a finished surround, while the included liner and underlay hold and protect the pond water within the assembled structure.

The nominal capacity is 270 litres. A supplied Clean Inpond Filter 2000 combines a pump, filter and LED spotlight with a choice of fountain displays. This is the filtered Fish pond version of the range. The similarly named Nature Octagon instead uses a solar fountain and includes wildlife access features. Alongside the pump and filter equipment, the set includes the panels, reinforced liner, protective underlay, planting pocket, assembly components and setup guide. The manufacturer’s photograph shows an example of a finished pond. Fish, plants, gravel and other decorative contents are not included, so allow for those separately when planning your installation.

Position the pond for viewing and maintenance

The Octagon is useful where a pond will be seen from more than one direction, such as beside a seating area or within an open patio. Before assembly, think about which windows will face the places where you normally sit or walk. Avoid blocking those views with large pots, and leave enough space to reach the pond for feeding, plant care and cleaning.

A raised pond offers convenient access, but it still needs a suitable base. Blagdon requires a firm, level surface, and states a filled weight of 284kg for this model. The weight needs to be supported across the installation, rather than concentrated on an uneven edge. If you intend to use a deck, balcony or other suspended surface, confirm that it can carry the complete load before installing the pond.

Install the equipment before completing the layout

Work out the power connection and cable route before filling. The pump equipment uses a 230V supply and is supplied with a 10 metre mains cable. Follow the electrical and installation instructions for the equipment and use an appropriate outdoor power arrangement. Keep the pump accessible so that routine servicing does not require removing all the planting.

Assemble the pond in its final position using the illustrated guide. Blagdon describes a typical assembly time of under an hour, but base preparation and careful planting will take additional time. Check the liner placement and structural fixings before filling, then inspect the completed pond and equipment as the water level rises.

Adjust the fountain to suit the pond

Three fountain styles allow you to vary the appearance of the water display. Choose a pattern that remains comfortably within the pond, allowing for wind and the final water level. After adjusting the display, watch it for a while rather than assuming that a taller spray is always the best setting for a compact pond.

The maximum pump flow is 650 litres per hour. This figure should be read separately from the maximum pumping height of 1.25 metres. The pump does not produce both maximum values at the same time, and the actual display also depends on the outlet arrangement and the cleanliness of the equipment. Check the intake and follow the filter maintenance instructions if the display becomes weaker.

Plan planting around the viewing windows

The supplied planting pocket gives marginal plants a defined position around the pond. Choose varieties according to their mature size and planting depth, and leave access to the filter and windows. Some open space behind the windows helps you enjoy the underwater view. Consider how baskets and root growth will look from the side, not just from above. The LED spotlight adds another way to enjoy the pond after dark, particularly when planting and equipment are arranged so they do not obstruct the intended view.

Establishing a healthy small fish pond

Included filtration is useful, but stocking still needs to suit the volume and the eventual adult size of the fish. A 270 litre patio pond should not be treated as a home for large koi. Allow biological filtration to establish, introduce suitable fish gradually and check water quality as the pond develops. Ask for advice before buying fish if you are unsure of their long term requirements.

Regular care includes checking the water level, removing leaves, managing plant growth and maintaining the pump and filter. Clean the windows gently with a method suitable for their material, and follow the manufacturer instructions for seasonal care and servicing.
