A complete no-dig wildlife pond for sunny patios and gardens
The Blagdon Liberty Solar No-Dig Nature Pool turns a level patch of patio, decking or garden into a planted wildlife pond without excavation, concrete or a mains electricity supply. The 190-litre pool combines convincing wood-effect click-fit panels with a fibre-reinforced liner, underlay, planting beach, wildlife escape ladder and a floating solar fountain.
This is not simply a bowl with a small solar pump added afterwards. The layout has been designed around wildlife: the shallow beach gives birds somewhere to drink and bathe, the planting pocket holds useful cover close to the waterline, and the ladder provides a route out for animals that enter the pool. The fountain adds sound and movement whenever its solar panel receives strong, direct sunlight.
For a small garden, rented home or customer who does not want to dig a permanent pond, it is one of the most complete ways to introduce open water and aquatic plants. If you later move house or redesign the garden, the pool can be drained and relocated far more easily than an in-ground liner pond.
Why choose the Liberty Solar Nature Pool?
- No digging: build it on a completely level, stable surface rather than excavating a pond.
- Approximately 190 litres: enough water for a worthwhile planted feature without dominating a modest patio.
- Wildlife-led design: a bathing beach, planting pocket and escape ladder are included.
- Mains-free movement: the floating fountain is powered directly by a 7V, 2.2W solar panel.
- Five fountain displays: supplied fittings let you alter the appearance of the spray.
- Strong liner system: fibre-reinforced liner and underlay are supplied with the frame.
- Quick click-fit construction: Blagdon describes the kit as buildable in under an hour when the base is ready.
- Three-year guarantee: for useful reassurance on a complete outdoor water feature.
Solar performance: the important point to understand
The included pump can produce up to approximately 180 litres per hour in full, direct and unshaded sunlight. It is a direct-solar system, so the fountain responds to the available light: strong midday sun gives the best display, while cloud, shadows, winter sun and a poorly positioned panel reduce or stop the flow. That is normal behaviour rather than a fault.
Choose the site before filling the pool. A south-facing position with an open view of the sky is ideal. Watch where fences, trees, buildings and patio umbrellas cast shade through the middle of the day. The fountain must remain in water while operating; never allow the pump to run dry.
Planting the pool for wildlife
A new container of tap water offers little shelter by itself. Plants turn it into habitat: submerged foliage gives small aquatic life cover, marginal plants provide perching and emergence points, and a little surface cover moderates bright sunlight. Use the supplied planting pocket and add appropriately sized aquatic baskets where there is room.
A balanced selection might include compact marginal pond plants, genuinely submerged oxygenating plants and restrained floating plants. Avoid filling every inch on day one; leave open water around the fountain and room for growth.
Do not add soil loose to the pool. Use aquatic compost in suitable baskets, cap it with washed aquatic gravel and rinse dusty materials before lowering them into the water. Never collect plants or animals from the wild.
Is the Liberty Nature Pool suitable for fish?
We regard the Liberty primarily as a wildlife and planted nature pool. It has no continuously powered biological filter, and its shallow 190-litre volume changes temperature faster than a larger in-ground pond. The solar fountain alone should not be treated as fish life-support equipment.
If fish are the main reason for buying a raised pool, choose one of the filtered Affinity View Half Moon, Affinity View Octagon or larger Affinity Mocha Octagon kits instead. None of these compact pools is suitable for koi.
Installation and first fill
- Choose a firm, flat and completely level base capable of carrying more than 190kg of water plus the pool and contents.
- Remove sharp debris and use the supplied underlay exactly as the instructions show.
- Dry-build and check every panel before positioning the liner.
- Fill progressively while smoothing the liner rather than trying to pull out creases after the pool is full.
- Treat new tap water with a suitable pond dechlorinator before adding plants or wildlife-sensitive material.
- Position the solar panel in direct sun and keep the pump submerged.
A full pool cannot be levelled by pushing packing beneath one corner. If the waterline is visibly uneven, drain it and correct the base. Keep children supervised around any open water and site the pool where it will not obstruct a path.

Care through the year
Remove fallen leaves before they decay, thin excess plant growth and top up with conditioned water during hot weather. Keep the pump intake and fountain heads clean. In freezing conditions, follow the Blagdon instructions for the pump and do not allow trapped ice to damage removable fountain parts. Never smash ice on the surface, because the shock can damage the liner and any wildlife below.
Frequently asked questions
Does the Liberty Nature Pool need mains electricity?
No. Its fountain pump runs from the supplied solar panel, so there is no mains cable across the garden.
Will the fountain run on a cloudy day?
Output depends on direct sunlight. It may slow or stop when the panel is shaded, the sky is overcast or the sun is weak.
How much water does it hold?
The manufacturer’s dimension graphic gives an approximate volume of 190 litres.
Can it go on decking?
Only if the decking is structurally capable of supporting the filled pool and remains completely level. A filled pool weighs well over 190kg once the frame, planting and equipment are included.
Can I put fish in it?
We recommend it primarily as a wildlife and planted pool. It has no continuous biological filtration, so a filtered Affinity pool is the more responsible choice when fish are the priority.
Will frogs be able to get out?
The supplied wildlife ladder provides an exit route. Keep it correctly positioned and make sure plants do not block access.
How quickly can it be built?
Blagdon describes the click-fit pool as buildable in under an hour once a suitable level base has been prepared.
Does it include plants?
No. The planting pocket is included, but plants and planting materials are purchased separately.
Can I move it after filling?
No. Drain it fully before attempting to dismantle or relocate it.
What happens at night?
Because this is a direct-solar fountain, it stops when there is insufficient light. That is expected.
