What the polymer wool does

Fine wool forms part of the filter’s mechanical cleaning system. Water passing through the pad leaves fine debris behind, helping to improve the view through water affected by suspended particles. The pad works within the filter alongside its other components; it is not a standalone treatment that can simply be dropped into the pond.

It is helpful to distinguish the wool from the other service items. Filter foam, ceramic biological media, the pump impeller and any fitted UV clarifier each have their own function and maintenance requirements. A new wool pad does not renew a worn impeller or replace a UV lamp. Identify which component needs attention so that the replacement you buy addresses the actual maintenance job.

When should the pad be changed?

Inspect the fine-filter pad as part of your normal filter maintenance, following the instructions for your exact model. Dirt loading varies between installations, so the condition of the pad and the operation of the filter are more useful guides than assuming that every pond needs the same replacement timetable. Keep a note of when you last serviced the unit, especially during periods when the pond produces more debris.

A reduced fountain or feature flow deserves attention, but it does not identify one particular fault by itself. Check the complete water path, including the intake, filter media and outlet arrangement. If the wool is blocked, follow the manufacturer’s replacement guidance. If the pad is already fresh and the problem remains, investigate the other parts of the system rather than continuing to replace clean consumables.

Preparing for a filter service

Isolate the electrical supply before handling or opening pond equipment. Have the correct replacement pads and the model’s instructions ready, and use a clean place to put the removed parts. Support the filter body when lifting the unit; electrical cables should never be used as lifting handles. Take care with any connected fountain fittings, hoses and light assembly as you move the filter.

Note how the existing pad sits in its holder before removing it. Fit the replacement in the corresponding position and check that the cartridge and filter lid are properly reassembled before returning the unit to operation. Do not pack extra layers into the holder to try to increase filtration. Use the arrangement specified for the equipment, then check that normal flow has returned after the service.

Filter pads and viewing-window pads

If the InPond is installed in an Affinity pool, keep its filter consumables separate from the pads used to clean the pool’s viewing windows. This product belongs inside the filter. Affinity windows have their own Affinity Window Cleaning Pads and care instructions, so a dirty filter pad should not be used on the viewing surface.

For a pool that needs both jobs doing, make two separate checks: inspect the filter’s media for servicing and look at the viewing panel for surface dirt. Cleaning the panel helps you see through the window; maintaining the filter addresses the water flowing through the equipment. Neither task automatically replaces the other.

Keeping spare pads to hand

Store the unused pads somewhere clean and dry with the packaging or part number. A labelled maintenance box is particularly helpful where several pumps and filters are used, because loose spare media can be difficult to identify later. Keeping a spare available also means a routine inspection does not have to become an extended interruption while you wait for a replacement.
