BacterLife P is Waterlife’s liquid bacterial treatment for pond filters and water quality. The manufacturer describes two useful groups of organisms: bacteria that help break down solid fish waste, uneaten food and plant debris, and bacteria associated with processing ammonia in the biological filtration cycle.

Choose it when starting a new filter, recovering after a substantial clean or treatment course, supporting the system in spring, or helping the filter process residual organic material after algae removal. It is not an instant substitute for a mature filter and cannot make an overloaded or oxygen-starved system safe by itself.

Check the pond before treating

Start by testing ammonia, nitrite, pH and, where relevant, KH. Poor water quality can cause lethargy, flashing, excess mucus, sore skin and secondary infection, so adding medication without checking the water can hide the real cause. Work out the actual pond volume after allowing for shelves, rockwork, pipework and filter chambers; a guessed volume can lead to under-dosing or over-dosing.

Shake and dose according to the current label, targeting the biological filter or a high-flow area that carries the culture into the media. Maintain circulation and strong oxygen. Avoid immediately washing the media again, and follow the pack instructions regarding UV operation while the bacteria establish.

• A bacterial starter does not instantly mature a new filter.
• Any detectable ammonia or nitrite still requires reduced feeding, oxygen and appropriate water-quality action.
• Do not rinse established biological media in untreated chlorinated tap water.
• Store the product as directed and do not use an expired or heat-damaged culture.

Read the current container label before every use because formulations, directions and regulatory wording can change. Do not mix remedies unless the manufacturer explicitly says they are compatible. Keep strong aeration running, watch the fish during treatment and obtain specialist advice when the diagnosis is uncertain or fish are severely distressed.
