NT Labs Satus Biological Filter Supplement

Help establish new biofilters and support existing pond and aquarium systems

NT Labs Satus is a liquid biological filter supplement for freshwater and marine aquariums and ponds. It supplies a blend of organisms intended to help establish biological filtration and support an existing filter after maintenance or changes to the system. Choose it when starting a biofilter, introducing fish or helping the biological system recover after cleaning or an appropriate treatment course.

Satus works alongside the biological filter. The filter still needs suitable media, water flow and normal maintenance, and the fish need an appropriate environment and air supply. Water testing remains the way to assess how the system is responding. A bacterial supplement is most useful as part of that complete routine, with changes in ammonia and nitrite monitored as the filter develops.

What Satus is designed to do

NT Labs describes a concentrated blend of heterotrophic and autotrophic organisms, including aerobic and anaerobic nitrifying bacteria. The product is intended to support the processing of ammonia and nitrite and the breakdown of organic waste. The manufacturer also describes its additional Satus organism as contributing to this biological activity. These are the functions to consider when choosing the product for a new or established installation.

In a new system, the biological filter has not yet developed the same working population as a mature filter. Changes to fish numbers, feeding or maintenance can also alter the load on an established filter. Satus is designed to support that biological process, while sensible stocking, feeding and regular testing help you judge the system’s actual capacity.

Choose enough for the full routine

Select the bottle size above after checking the complete schedule on the label. A startup course involves repeated additions, so the amount needed for a single dose is not the same as the amount needed to complete the course. Larger systems and repeated maintenance may justify a larger bottle even when an individual addition uses relatively little liquid.

Measure the working water volume as accurately as practical. A tank’s nominal capacity may include space occupied by substrate and ornaments, while external equipment adds water elsewhere. Pond shelves and irregular shapes also affect the calculation. Record the volume used for dosing so that each addition follows the same basis, and recheck it after major changes to the installation.

Before adding Satus

Shake the bottle thoroughly before measuring. NT Labs directs users to switch off UV and ozone equipment before adding Satus and restore it two hours later. Keep normal filtration and circulation operating; pausing a UV unit is a separate action from stopping the biological filter. A reminder can help ensure that the UV or ozone equipment is restarted at the intended time.

The manufacturer’s FAQ says Satus can be introduced into the water or the filter, with organisms then travelling through the system and colonising surfaces. Follow the label for your setup and measure the dose with suitable equipment. Avoid guessing small amounts from an unmarked cap or using a measuring container that has held cleaning chemicals.

Starting a new pond or aquarium

Follow the full startup schedule supplied with the bottle, including the initial addition and subsequent daily doses. NT Labs describes a seven-day startup routine. Keep a note of each addition so that doses are not missed or duplicated, especially where several people look after the system. Use the instructions appropriate to pond or aquarium use when consulting the manufacturer’s guidance.

Condition incoming tap water with an appropriate product such as NT Labs Optimus before relying on the biological filter. The two products have complementary roles: Optimus prepares the water and Satus supports biological activity. Each has its own directions, so measure them separately rather than assuming they share a dose.

Continue testing ammonia and nitrite as the system matures and after fish are introduced. A filter supplement does not provide a measured confirmation that a particular stocking level is suitable. Make decisions using water results, the equipment’s capacity and the condition of the fish. Increase the load on a developing system carefully and investigate unexpected readings promptly.

Supporting an established filter

NT Labs identifies filter cleaning, water changes, new fish and completion of medication as occasions when Satus can be useful. Follow the maintenance schedule on your bottle, and take account of any instructions associated with the medication used. Antibacterial treatments may affect the organisms in the filter, so their completion can be an important point to review biological performance.

Preserve mature biological media during routine cleaning where practical and follow the filter manufacturer’s instructions. Continue removing trapped solids and maintaining water flow. Satus supports biological activity, but the physical maintenance of the filter remains part of keeping the system working properly. Note any substantial cleaning or media replacement alongside subsequent water test results.

Checking the results

Use water test kits suitable for the system, checking freshwater or marine compatibility where relevant. Keep dated results so that a developing trend is easier to recognise. If ammonia or nitrite remains elevated, review filter operation, feeding, stocking and recent maintenance instead of assuming the next addition alone will solve the problem.

NT Labs explains that Satus supports the conversion of ammonia and nitrite into nitrate; it does not describe Satus as a nitrate-removal product. Keep the water-change and wider maintenance routine appropriate to your pond or aquarium. Where fish show distress, assess water quality and aeration promptly and get suitable advice for the actual condition.

Storage between uses

Keep the original label with the bottle and close it after measuring. NT Labs states that Satus should be protected from freezing and extreme heat, with storage above freezing and below 50°C. Choose a practical location away from direct heat and household chemicals, and keep it out of reach of children. Shake again before the next use and follow the current bottle directions.
