Variegated Sweet Flag, scientifically known as Acorus calamus ‘Variegatus’, is a striking architectural marginal pond plant admired for its elegant cream striped foliage and lightly aromatic leaves. This beautiful perennial thrives in moist soils and shallow water, making it an excellent choice for pond margins, bog gardens, streams, wetlands, and wildlife ponds.

With its upright sword shaped leaves marked by creamy white variegation, Variegated Sweet Flag instantly adds texture, height, and contrast around the edge of the pond. The foliage remains attractive throughout the growing season and creates movement when planted in groups along pond shelves or damp borders. Its vertical growth habit makes it ideal for softening pond edging while adding structure amongst lower growing aquatic plants.

Unlike many flowering pond marginals, Acorus calamus ‘Variegatus’ is primarily grown for its foliage interest. The leaves are lightly fragrant when crushed, bringing an additional sensory element to the garden. During late spring and early summer, small yellow green flower spikes may appear amongst the foliage, although they are subtle compared to the plant’s decorative striped leaves.

Its spreading root system can also help stabilise pond edges and reduce soil erosion in wetter areas of the garden.

Easy to grow and low maintenance, Acorus calamus ‘Variegatus’ is suitable for both beginner and experienced pond keepers. It combines exceptionally well with flowering marginals such as Pickerel Weed, Iris varieties, and moisture loving creeping plants to create a balanced and natural pond planting scheme.

In milder conditions some foliage may remain into winter, but Variegated Sweet Flag is normally deciduous or partly deciduous in the UK. Its fresh cream-striped growth returns in spring and provides a long season of colour and structure around the pond.

Care Instructions

• Plant Variegated Sweet Flag in shallow pond margins, damp soil, or boggy areas where the soil remains consistently moist throughout the year.
• Place the aquatic basket with the crown sitting just above or slightly below the water level.
• Grow in full sun or partial shade for healthiest foliage colour and strongest growth.
• Remove dead or damaged leaves during late autumn or early spring to maintain a tidy appearance.
• Divide mature clumps every few years to prevent overcrowding and encourage vigorous new growth.
• Avoid allowing the plant to completely dry out during warmer weather.

Dispatching Your Pond Plants

Your Variegated Sweet Flag will be carefully packed to protect the foliage and roots during transit.

Orders received by 11am Monday to Wednesday are normally dispatched on the following working day using a next working day courier service. During busy periods, dispatch may occasionally take an extra day.

To avoid plants being held in depots over a weekend, we do not usually dispatch on Fridays. Highlands and Islands orders using a two day service are not normally dispatched on Thursdays.

Available basket sizes:

• 1 Litre Basket – usually 11 × 11 × 11cm square; some varieties may be supplied in a 14cm diameter × 10cm round basket
• Pack of 3 × 1 Litre Baskets – each usually 11 × 11 × 11cm square
• 3 Litre Hexagonal Basket – 18 × 18 × 16cm

Planting depth is measured from the top of the aquatic basket to the water surface.

Finofil baskets are manufactured in the UK from 100% recycled plastic and are fully recyclable. Their fine dual-mesh construction helps retain aquatic soil while allowing water and nutrients to reach the roots. Basket shape may vary slightly depending on the plant and supplier availability.
