Sweet Flag | Acorus calamus

Tall architectural marginal pond plant with aromatic foliage for ponds and bog gardens

Sweet Flag, scientifically known as Acorus calamus, is a striking and highly versatile marginal pond plant valued for its tall sword shaped foliage, architectural structure, and wildlife friendly qualities. Ideal for pond margins, bog gardens, wildlife ponds, and naturalistic planting schemes, Sweet Flag brings both texture and movement to the water’s edge while helping create a balanced and healthy pond environment.

This robust perennial forms dense upright clumps of fresh green aromatic leaves that release a subtle spicy fragrance when crushed or brushed against. Reaching heights of up to 1 metre, Sweet Flag is perfect for adding vertical structure around larger ponds and damp garden areas without appearing too heavy or overpowering. Its elegant foliage remains attractive throughout the growing season and works beautifully alongside flowering marginal plants and waterlilies.

From late spring into summer, Acorus calamus produces unusual greenish yellow flower spikes nestled amongst the foliage. Although subtle compared to more colourful pond plants, the flowers add seasonal interest and contribute to the plant’s natural charm. Sweet Flag is often grown primarily for its impressive foliage, which creates a soft reed like appearance along pond edges and shallow water areas.

Sweet Flag thrives in moist soil, boggy ground, or shallow pond margins with water depths up to approximately 15 cm. It performs best in full sun or partial shade and is highly reliable in UK gardens thanks to its excellent hardiness. Once established, it requires very little maintenance and will gradually form attractive clumps over time.

One of the biggest benefits of Sweet Flag is its wildlife value. The dense foliage provides shelter for amphibians, emerging dragonflies, and beneficial pond insects, while the root system helps stabilise pond edges and reduce erosion in softer ground conditions. This makes it a superb choice for wildlife ponds and more natural pond designs.

Its strong upright habit also makes it ideal for softening filter edges, disguising pond liners, or creating a more established and mature pond appearance. Sweet Flag combines particularly well with Iris, sedges, rushes, and flowering marginal plants to create layered and natural planting displays.

For smaller ponds or compact planting spaces, dwarf varieties such as Acorus gramineus ‘Ogon’ may be more suitable. Standard Acorus calamus is deciduous and remains one of the best choices for adding height and movement to medium and larger pond margins during the growing season.
