Understand what the media is removing

Aquadistri identifies ammonium removal as the main role of SuperFish Zeolite. This is a different job from straining out leaves or providing a permanent biological-media bed. Use it where you need that specific function, while retaining the mechanical and biological stages that keep the rest of the filtration system working.

Ammonia exists in water as un-ionised ammonia, NH3, and ionised ammonium, NH4+. Many pond test kits measure the combined amount. University of Florida guidance explains that pH and temperature influence the proportion in the more toxic NH3 form: the same total reading can therefore have different implications under different water conditions.

Test before and during use

Check ammonia, nitrite, pH and temperature before deciding how to respond to a water-quality problem. Ammonia cannot reliably be detected by the appearance or smell of pond water. A clear pond may still give an unwanted reading, and a single test after adding media does not establish that the underlying problem has been corrected.

Install it where removal is straightforward

Keep the bag clear of moving parts and avoid squeezing it into a space that restricts the filter’s intended flow path.

Before adding the media, check the filter’s own instructions and measure the usable compartment. The 10-litre quantity describes loose media volume, not the external dimensions of the retail bag or a ready-made cartridge. Dividing the contents between suitable bags may make handling more manageable, provided the filter arrangement remains suitable.

Remove before salt or medication

The manufacturer’s instruction is explicit: remove zeolite from the water when treating with medication or salt. Make this part of your treatment preparation, before adding the treatment. Keep a note of where zeolite is installed, especially where more than one filter or media chamber serves the pond.

Saturation and maintenance

Zeolite has a limited working capacity. Aquadistri states that it saturates and should then be replaced or cleaned. The pack is not supplied with a universal calendar interval that can account for every pond’s waste load. Ongoing water testing is more useful than assuming that media of a particular age must still be effective.

Use the cleaning or replacement directions supplied for this SuperFish product. A quick rinse that removes visible debris should not be assumed to restore its ammonium-binding capacity. Do not add a regeneration solution to the pond or copy a recipe from an unrelated brand’s media. Keep any maintenance process separate from the fish system.

Investigate why ammonia is present

Fish continually produce ammonia, while uneaten food and decomposing material add to the load. Biological filtration converts ammonia through nitrite to nitrate and depends on adequate oxygen and alkalinity. Supporting that process is the long-term task; adding zeolite does not by itself establish a mature biological filter.

OATA’s pond-fish guidance stresses regular maintenance and appropriate stocking and feeding. Check for accumulated waste, changes in the amount fed and interruption to filtration. If fish are showing distress, seek prompt advice with current water-test results rather than waiting to see whether a new bag of media resolves everything.
