Air-Aqua Large SuperBead Filter – 8,000 Gallon
The Air-Aqua Large SuperBead is a substantial bead filter for demanding koi ponds, ornamental ponds and other recirculating water systems. It combines fine mechanical filtration with a large protected surface for biological bacteria, but uses a low-pressure cleaning method that does not need a separate air blower.
Air-Aqua rates the Large model for flows up to 35m³/h and a nominal maximum pond volume of 70m³. Those figures need sensible interpretation. A heavily stocked koi pond with high feeding, long pipe runs or warm summer water will place more demand on the system than a lightly stocked ornamental pond of the same volume.
Why choose the SuperBead?
- Mechanical and biological filtration in one pressure vessel
- Supplied with approximately 75kg of floating bead media
- Designed for low-pressure, energy-conscious pumping
- No separate blower required for normal cleaning
- Suitable for koi ponds, ornamental ponds, swimming ponds and pools when correctly specified
- 3-inch inlet and outlet connections on the UK/US Large model
A coarse pre-filter is essential
The SuperBead should not be asked to swallow leaves and heavy pond debris. Air-Aqua specifies a coarse mechanical stage such as a sieve or drum before the filter. Browse our pond pre-filters and solids separators or drum filters when planning the complete system.
Flow and pump selection
The manufacturer’s recommended pump range is 5–35m³/h at approximately 0.2 bar. Use the required turnover and the pump curve at the real system resistance; the largest number on a pump label is measured with little or no head. Generous pipework, swept bends and accessible isolation valves make a significant difference to both flow and running cost.
Cleaning and installation
During cleaning, the bead bed is disturbed using the filter’s water and air action before dirty water is discharged to waste. Provide a free-flowing waste route and enough space to operate every valve safely. The official manual states that operating pressure must not exceed 0.7 bar.

Our practical view: this is a professional filter and deserves a proper system check. Send us the pond volume, fish load, daily feeding, proposed pre-filter, pump and pipe layout and we will help you check whether the Large SuperBead is the right fit.
Frequently asked questions
Does the Large SuperBead include the media?
Yes. Air-Aqua specifies approximately 75kg of bead media for the Large model.
Does it need an air blower?
No separate blower is required for the normal SuperBead cleaning process.
Can I run it directly from a bottom drain?
A coarse pre-filter should intercept large solids before the SuperBead. The exact gravity or pump-fed layout should follow the current manual and site design.
Will it clear green water?
The filter removes waste and supports biological treatment, but a correctly sized pond UV is normally used for suspended green-water algae.
Is the 70m³ rating suitable for every koi pond?
No. It is a manufacturer maximum. Stocking, feeding, temperature, pre-filtration and required water quality must all be considered.
