Summer Snowflake | Gratiola officinalis
Delicate white flowering marginal pond plant perfect for wildlife ponds and natural pond edges
Summer Snowflake, scientifically known as Gratiola officinalis, is a charming and delicate marginal pond plant that brings understated beauty and natural elegance to pond margins, bog gardens, and damp planting areas. Producing masses of small white to pale pink tubular flowers from late spring through to early autumn, this graceful perennial creates a soft and natural display that blends beautifully into wildlife friendly pond settings.
Native to wetland habitats across parts of Europe, Summer Snowflake thrives in shallow water and permanently moist soils, making it an ideal choice for pond shelves, damp borders, and bog gardens. Its slender upright stems are lined with narrow lance shaped green leaves, while the elegant flowers appear delicately spaced along the stems, giving the plant a light and airy appearance.
One of the standout qualities of Gratiola officinalis is its long flowering season. Blooming from May through to September, it provides valuable late spring and summer colour around the pond edge while also supporting pollinators such as bees, hoverflies, and beneficial insects. The flowers may appear white or occasionally flushed with pale pink tones depending on growing conditions and maturity.
Summer Snowflake works especially well in naturalistic pond planting schemes where softer textures and wildlife value are important. Its gently spreading growth habit helps soften hard pond edges and transitions beautifully between water and surrounding garden planting. It also pairs wonderfully with creeping pond plants, water forget me not, and low growing marginals.
Despite its delicate appearance, this plant is hardy and reliable in UK conditions. Once established, it requires very little maintenance and performs best when planted in consistently moist soil or shallow water up to approximately 5 cm deep. It is suitable for ponds of all sizes, including smaller wildlife ponds and decorative patio ponds.
Because of its relatively compact size, Summer Snowflake is easy to position within mixed marginal planting displays without becoming overpowering. The neat upright habit also helps provide subtle vertical structure around shallow pond shelves while maintaining a soft and relaxed appearance.
For gardeners looking to encourage biodiversity while also adding elegant seasonal colour to pond margins, Summer Snowflake is an excellent choice. Its long flowering period, wildlife friendly nature, and delicate appearance make it a superb addition to both traditional and contemporary water gardens.

Care Instructions

- Avoid allowing the soil to dry out completely during warmer weather, particularly if planted in boggy borders rather than directly within the pond margin.
- Trim back faded growth and old stems in autumn once the foliage naturally dies back. This encourages fresh vigorous growth the following spring.
