Society Garlic | Tulbaghia violacea

Fragrant lilac flowering marginal plant for pond edges, bog gardens, and late season colour

Society Garlic, scientifically known as Tulbaghia violacea, is a beautiful ornamental perennial loved for its fragrant lilac purple flowers and elegant strap like foliage. Flowering from mid summer right through into autumn, this eye catching pond side plant provides valuable late season colour when many other marginal plants are beginning to fade. Its neat upright habit and long flowering period make it an excellent addition to pond margins, bog gardens, gravel gardens, and damp borders.

The clusters of soft lilac flowers are held above narrow grey green foliage on slender stems, creating a delicate and airy appearance around ponds and water features. Both the flowers and foliage carry a mild garlic scent when brushed or crushed, which adds another layer of interest to this unique ornamental plant.

Tulbaghia violacea works particularly well in modern pond designs and contemporary wildlife gardens where texture, movement, and prolonged flowering are important. The compact clump forming growth habit makes it ideal for smaller ponds, patio ponds, and container water gardens where larger vigorous marginals would become too overpowering.

Throughout summer and early autumn, Society Garlic becomes highly attractive to pollinators including bees, butterflies, and hoverflies. The nectar rich flowers help support beneficial insects later in the season when food sources begin to reduce, making this plant an excellent choice for wildlife friendly planting schemes.

Although often used around pond margins and bog gardens, Society Garlic also performs very well in damp borders and decorative containers provided the soil remains consistently moist. It prefers a sunny sheltered position where it can produce the strongest flowering displays and healthiest foliage growth.

In milder UK regions, Tulbaghia violacea remains reliably hardy. However, in colder areas or exposed gardens, some winter protection may be beneficial, particularly during prolonged freezing conditions. Growing the plant within aquatic baskets also makes it easier to move or protect during harsher winters if required.

Its neat foliage, long flowering period, and elegant blooms make Society Garlic a versatile plant that combines beautifully with water forget me not, lobelia, iris varieties, and ornamental pond grasses. Whether used in a wildlife pond or a formal water garden, it adds softness, colour, and movement throughout the warmer months.

For pond keepers looking for a refined marginal plant with excellent late season colour and pollinator benefits, Society Garlic is a superb choice.
