Corkscrew Rush | Juncus effusus var. spiralis

Unique spiral pond plant for texture, structure, and modern planting

Corkscrew Rush (Juncus effusus var. spiralis) is a truly eye catching marginal plant, instantly recognisable for its twisted, spiral stems that add movement, texture, and architectural interest to pond edges and damp garden areas. Unlike traditional upright reeds and grasses, this unusual variety creates a sculptural effect that works beautifully in both naturalistic and contemporary planting schemes.

Growing in tight, clump forming clusters, Corkscrew Rush produces deep green stems that curl and twist into corkscrew shapes, creating a striking visual contrast against flatter foliage plants. Although it does produce small brown flower spikes between July and September, the real appeal of this plant lies in its distinctive foliage, which remains attractive throughout the year.

Reaching a height of around 25 cm to 45 cm, it is ideal for pond margins, bog gardens, and damp borders where it can be positioned to stand out as a feature plant. Its compact growth habit makes it suitable for both small and medium sized ponds, offering interest without overwhelming surrounding planting.

Corkscrew Rush thrives in moist to wet soil and shallow water conditions, making it perfect for marginal shelves or consistently damp ground. It performs best in full sun, where the colour and form of the stems are most pronounced, but it will also tolerate partial shade.

In addition to its visual appeal, this plant also provides practical benefits. Its dense clumps help stabilise soil around pond edges and offer shelter for small wildlife such as amphibians and insects. Fully hardy in the UK, it is a reliable and low maintenance plant that will return year after year with minimal care.

Whether you are looking to add contrast, structure, or a unique talking point to your pond planting, Corkscrew Rush is an excellent choice that delivers something a little different.
