Mixed Louisiana Iris | Iris louisiana Mixed
A mixed selection of Louisiana Iris with upright foliage and seasonal flowers, ideal for sunny pond edges, shallow margins, damp borders and ornamental water gardens.
Mixed Louisiana Iris flowers for sunny pond margins and water garden planting
Mixed Louisiana Iris is an ornamental marginal pond plant grown for its upright sword like foliage and colourful seasonal flowers. It is a brilliant choice for adding height, structure and a more decorative finish to pond margins, damp borders, bog gardens and water garden planting schemes.
Louisiana Iris varieties are known for their bold, elegant flowers and strong vertical foliage. This mixed selection may include a range of flower colours depending on availability and the plants supplied. As a mixed iris product, exact colours can vary, making it a good choice for customers who want a natural selection rather than one fixed flower colour.
This iris is especially useful around sunny pond edges, where the upright leaves create strong shape and help soften the line between open water and the surrounding garden. The foliage adds structure even when the plant is not in flower, while the summer blooms bring colour and interest during the main pond planting season.
Mixed Louisiana Iris is best grown in shallow water or consistently damp soil. It can be planted in an aquatic basket on a pond shelf, at the waterline, in a bog garden or in a damp border where the roots remain moist. The recommended planting depth is 0 cm to 15 cm, measured from the top of the basket to the water surface. For smaller or newly supplied plants, it is usually best to start them closer to the surface and allow them to establish before moving them deeper within the recommended range.
This is a great option for customers who want a more ornamental water garden look while still using proper marginal pond plants. It pairs well with rushes, grasses, Primulas, Astilbes, Water Forget Me Not, Pickerel Weed, Golden Club and other moisture loving plants. It also looks very effective when planted in groups or repeated along a sunny pond edge.
Mixed Louisiana Iris is not UK native, but it is suitable for home pond use and is not classed as an invasive plant. It is mainly chosen for ornamental value, strong foliage and attractive flowers rather than as a primary wildlife plant.
Please note: as with many irises, the rhizomes and plant parts can be harmful if eaten by humans or pets.

Reasons to buy Mixed Louisiana Iris
Mixed Louisiana Iris is a great choice if you want a colourful iris for a pond edge but do not need one specific named variety. The mixed selection gives a more natural planted feel, with flower colour depending on the plants available at the time.
It is especially useful for adding height around ponds. The upright foliage creates a strong vertical feature that contrasts beautifully with lower growing plants, creeping marginals, waterlily leaves and softer foliage plants.
This iris is also a good option for ornamental ponds and water gardens. It brings a more decorative look to pond shelves and damp planting areas while still being suitable for proper marginal planting.
For the best display, plant in small groups or repeat along the pond edge. Several plants together will create a stronger impact than a single plant on its own.
Care instructions
Plant Mixed Louisiana Iris in full sun or partial shade. A bright position will usually give the best flowering, although partial shade is suitable if the soil or basket remains reliably moist.
For pond planting, place the aquatic basket on a shallow marginal shelf at a depth of 0 cm to 15 cm. Planting depth is measured from the top of the basket to the water surface.
Avoid planting young or newly supplied plants too deep straight away. Start them close to the waterline and allow them to establish before moving them deeper within the recommended range.
If planting outside the pond, use damp soil, boggy soil or a moisture retentive border. Do not allow the rootball to dry out, especially during warm weather or while the plant is establishing.
After the foliage has died back in autumn, cut it back to just above the water surface or close to the base of the plant. If trimming is left until spring, take care not to damage new emerging shoots.
Divide mature clumps every few years if they become overcrowded or flowering begins to reduce. Early spring is usually a good time to divide and replant.
Flowering period
Mixed Louisiana Iris usually flowers in June and July.
Flower colours will vary depending on the varieties supplied in the mixed selection. Flowers may appear in a range of Louisiana Iris colours and shades, making each batch slightly different.
Flowering depends on plant maturity, sunlight, moisture, water depth and seasonal weather. Plants are not always supplied in flower and may arrive as foliage plants outside the flowering period.

How many plants will I need?
For a full planted look on a marginal shelf, allow approximately:
• 5 x 1 litre plants per linear metre
• 3 x 3 litre plants per linear metre
Leave space between plant varieties so each plant has room to establish. Louisiana Iris forms clumps over time, so avoid overcrowding with very vigorous spreading plants.
Your plant on arrival
Your Mixed Louisiana Iris will arrive potted, depending on the size selected.
1 litre, 3 litre and 5 litre marginal plants arrive pre planted in Finofil aquatic baskets using aquatic soil and slow release fertiliser. These can normally be placed straight onto a pond shelf at the recommended depth.
9 cm plants arrive in solid nursery pots and will need repotting into aquatic baskets before being placed into the pond.
Aquatic basket measurements:
• 1 litre basket: 11 cm wide x 11 cm high
• 3 litre basket: 18 cm wide x 16 cm high
• 5 litre basket: 24 cm wide x 14 cm high
Finofil aquatic baskets are made from 100% recycled plastic and are designed with a fine mesh that helps retain aquatic soil while allowing water to move around the roots. A hessian liner is optional and is not normally required.
Dispatching your pond plants
Pond plants are carefully selected, watered and packed before dispatch. As living plants, the amount of visible growth, foliage colour and flowering stage will naturally vary throughout the season.
Early season plants may arrive with less top growth and will develop once settled into suitable conditions. Plants sent outside their flowering period may not be in flower on arrival.
Unpack your plant promptly when it arrives and check that the aquatic basket or pot is moist. Place it into the pond, container pond or damp planting area as soon as practical.
Do not allow the basket, pot or rootball to dry out. If you cannot plant immediately, keep the plant in a bright, sheltered position and ensure the compost remains moist.
