Golden Club is one of those plants that instantly stands out in any pond. Unlike more traditional marginal plants, Orontium aquaticum offers something completely different, with its distinctive golden yellow flower spikes rising cleanly above the water and contrasting beautifully against deep green foliage.

Flowering from April through to June, Golden Club produces upright, club shaped blooms that appear almost dusted in gold. These unusual flowers are not only eye catching but also add early season interest when many other pond plants are only just starting to grow. The glossy, lance shaped leaves emerge from the water and create a strong architectural look, making this plant ideal for both modern and natural pond designs.

Golden Club thrives in shallow water, typically between 1 cm and 30 cm deep, making it perfect for marginal shelves, shallow zones, or gently sloping pond edges. It performs best in still or slow moving water where it can establish properly and develop into a neat, clump forming plant.

As well as its visual appeal, Golden Club plays an important role in supporting pond wildlife. Its upright foliage provides resting points for amphibians such as frogs and newts, while also offering shelter for emerging aquatic life. The leaves create light shade across the water surface, helping to regulate temperature and improve conditions for fish and beneficial bacteria.

This plant is fully hardy in most UK conditions and is relatively low maintenance once established. It prefers full sun for the best flowering display but will tolerate partial shade without issue. Growth is steady rather than aggressive, making it suitable for a wide range of pond sizes without becoming invasive.

Care Instructions

• Place on a marginal shelf at a depth of 1 cm to 30 cm, measured from the top of the basket to the water surface.
• Position in full sun for best flowering, although partial shade is tolerated. Ensure water remains still or slow moving for best establishment.
• Remove any dead or damaged leaves in autumn and tidy the plant as needed. Divide clumps every few years in spring to maintain healthy growth and encourage new shoots.

Dispatching Your Pond Plants

Your Golden Club will be carefully packed to protect the foliage and roots during transit.

Orders received by 11am Monday to Wednesday are normally dispatched on the following working day using a next working day courier service. During busy periods, dispatch may occasionally take an extra day.

To avoid plants being held in depots over a weekend, we do not usually dispatch on Fridays. Highlands and Islands orders using a two day service are not normally dispatched on Thursdays.

Available basket sizes:

• 1 Litre Basket – usually 11 × 11 × 11cm square; some varieties may be supplied in a 14cm diameter × 10cm round basket
• Pack of 3 × 1 Litre Baskets – each usually 11 × 11 × 11cm square
• 3 Litre Hexagonal Basket – 18 × 18 × 16cm

Planting depth is measured from the top of the aquatic basket to the water surface.

Finofil baskets are manufactured in the UK from 100% recycled plastic and are fully recyclable. Their fine dual-mesh construction helps retain aquatic soil while allowing water and nutrients to reach the roots. Basket shape may vary slightly depending on the plant and supplier availability.
