White Ragged Robin | Lychnis flos-cuculi ‘White Robin’
Elegant White Wildflower for Pond Margins, Bog Gardens and Wildlife Habitats
White Ragged Robin (Lychnis flos-cuculi ‘White Robin’) is a beautiful moisture loving perennial that brings a natural, meadow-like charm to pond edges, bog gardens, damp borders, and wildlife planting schemes. Producing masses of delicate pure white flowers with deeply divided, feathery petals, this elegant variety creates a soft and airy display from late spring through summer.
A white flowering form of the much-loved native Ragged Robin, ‘White Robin’ combines graceful beauty with excellent wildlife value. The star shaped flowers appear suspended above slender stems, gently swaying in the breeze and creating movement around the pond. Their distinctive ragged appearance makes them stand out from other marginal pond plants, adding texture and visual interest to naturalistic planting schemes.
Growing in neat clumps of lance shaped green foliage, White Ragged Robin thrives in consistently moist soil and is particularly well suited to pond margins, damp meadow gardens, rain gardens, and boggy borders. It performs best in full sun or partial shade and can be planted directly into wet soil or very shallow water around pond edges.
The flowers are highly attractive to bees, butterflies, hoverflies, and other beneficial pollinators. This makes White Ragged Robin an excellent choice for gardeners looking to encourage biodiversity and create a wildlife friendly pond environment. The upright stems also provide shelter and cover for insects and small amphibians throughout the growing season.
Despite its delicate appearance, White Ragged Robin is exceptionally hardy and can withstand even the coldest UK winters. Once established, it requires very little maintenance and will reliably return year after year. It may also self seed gently in favourable conditions, helping to create attractive drifts of naturalised planting.
This versatile plant works beautifully alongside Water Forget Me Not, Marsh Marigold, Mazus reptans, Oenanthe ‘Flamingo’, Iris varieties, and other moisture loving pond plants. Whether used in a wildlife pond, cottage garden, natural wetland area, or ornamental water garden, White Ragged Robin adds elegance, softness, and ecological value.
If you are looking for a graceful flowering pond margin plant that supports pollinators while producing a stunning display of white flowers, White Ragged Robin is an outstanding choice.
