Blagdon’s Clean Pond Machine range is aimed at pond owners who want clear-water filtration without repeatedly lifting, squeezing and replacing conventional foam blocks. Inside the sealed pressure vessel, Blagdon’s CHI media performs both mechanical and biological filtration. The media is covered by a lifetime guarantee and is cleaned in place: isolate the electricity, redirect the waste outlet and use the top-mounted Turn to Wash control to agitate and flush away collected dirt.

Because this is a pressure filter, the clean water can return to a raised waterfall or stream rather than relying entirely on gravity. Each model also includes a correctly sized UVC to control the suspended single-celled algae responsible for green water. The separate Clean Pond Pod chamber lets the filter work with Blagdon’s soluble 5-in-1 treatment pods without asking you to dismantle the vessel.

Why the CHI media is different

Conventional pressure filters squeeze dirty water through layers of foam. That works, but the foam gradually clogs, compresses and can be unpleasant to clean. CHI uses a durable moving mass of shaped media. Water is forced through it during normal operation, while the cleaning action loosens trapped waste so it can be discharged. The open protected surface also supports the bacteria that convert toxic ammonia and nitrite.

The lifetime media guarantee does not mean the filter is maintenance-free. Waste still has to be flushed before it compacts, the UVC quartz has to remain clean and the lamp should be renewed at the correct interval. The advantage is that routine service is cleaner and the main media is not a consumable foam set.

Choosing the pump and pipe

The pump must move the target flow through the complete circuit: intake cage, hose, bends, UVC/filter resistance and the rise to the return. A pump labelled 8,000 litres per hour will not deliver that figure at a raised waterfall through narrow corrugated hose. Use the largest connection the chosen filter and pump sensibly support, keep the run short and avoid unnecessary elbows. Compare our filter pumps, flexible hose and hose fittings.

Installation and cleaning

Place the filter on a firm, level base where every union, the control handle and the waste hose remain accessible. The vessel may be partly disguised, but never bury or box it in so tightly that it cannot be opened or replaced. Fixed outdoor electrical connections must be suitable for the location; the unit has a 3m cable and is deliberately not supplied with an indoor 13A plug. Use an appropriate outdoor switch box or connector and RCD protection.

1. Switch off the pump and UVC before changing any valve position.
2. Connect or direct the waste outlet to a suitable drain or garden area.
3. Use the Turn to Wash action until the discharged water runs substantially cleaner.
4. Return every control to filtration mode before restarting.
5. Check all unions for leaks and confirm the normal flow has returned.

For ongoing treatment, add the correct Blagdon Clean Pond Pods to the dosing chamber. The pods are useful biological support, but they do not replace water testing, dechlorination, sensible fish stocking or mechanical maintenance.

Frequently asked questions

Does the Clean Pond Machine include a pump?

No. The filter and integrated UVC are supplied, but the circulation pump must be selected separately from the required delivered flow and real installation head.

Can it return water to a waterfall?

Yes. A pressure filter can feed a raised return within the pump’s available head, but the final flow will be lower than the pump’s zero-head figure.

Is it suitable for koi?

Yes when the much lower koi/full-sun capacity is used. Do not size a koi system from the headline no-fish figure.

Do I need to replace the CHI media?

The main CHI media carries Blagdon’s lifetime guarantee. Clean it as instructed and investigate any loss of flow before assuming it needs replacement.

Will it clear green water?

The integrated UVC is designed to control suspended green-water algae when the unit is correctly sized, the lamp and quartz are serviceable, and sufficient flow passes through the filter.

How often should it be cleaned?

Clean when flow falls or the pond load requires it. During warm weather and heavy feeding that may be considerably more often than in winter.

Can I bury the filter?

It can be landscaped around, but keep the lid, controls, unions and waste route fully accessible and do not place it where groundwater can flood electrical parts.

Are Clean Pond Pods compulsory?

No, the filter can operate without them. They are an optional 5-in-1 treatment designed to support routine pond care.
